I have a 65 c10 that had a six/3speed in it, I will be putting a small block with a 700 trans in it. I cleared out the old crossmember and I'm ready for the new one.Is their a way to figure out what crossmember (height) I will need? has anyone else done this? Can you share the info?? Thanks:confused:

  2. I don't understand the question. Usually you put the trans in about the same relative position as the previous one, so the driveshaft angle stays similar. You probably will have the best luck modifying the stock crossmember to work with the new trans.

    sorry about any confusion,

Is the six cylinder/trans height the same on the sbc?? I know the trans crossmember needs to be pulled back because the engine/trans on the sbc is longer, the sbc seems to sit higher up then the six....sorry if im not making any sense..

Put the new engine and trans in the car with a jack under the trans. Hold the old x-member up to set trans height where it used to be. Re use old one or pick a uni up from Speedway.

It really depends on how you mount your SBC if you're making a swap and what rearend you using. I used a Camaro clip in my truck with lowered the engine from the original six cylinder configuration, so I had to lower the tranny mount as well. I used a Vette IRS in the back, so after I C-notched the frame rails, I took a measurement of the pinion angle and then lined up the tranny mount with the rearend, basically making the engine level. I take some measurements on my truck if you think it would help.

You might see if you can score a 64-72 auto trans truck crossmember, it makes life much easier, since it will bolt in once you drill the proper holes in the frame. But the original parking brake crossmember is probably in the way of the trans, you might want to switch to the 66 style parking brake cable setup.

On the motor mounts, the 292 has one side set forward of the other and you'll have to scrounge the correct bracket for the pass side, but the 230-250 mounts should work ok with the small block, just pull the 6 cyl mounts off the brackets and bolt them to the block (or get new ones)

I have the same truck and will be facing the same predicament in a couple of months. However, I was told that an early 70's crossmember will work just fine. but you know you'll hear a million different solutions to the problem. Thats the one that I was going to try first. Although, since you''ll probably have it all fiqured out by the time I get that far, I'll just aks you!! Good Luck.

I've done the swap a couple times, the truck auto trans crossmember up to 72 is what you want. The 73 and newer crossmember sits up too high.

the way i do it is to get the motor/trans in there at 2 degrees downslope then build the tranny crossmember to fit it...mel

The tranny pan is at the angle that you want the engine/trans to be, so just make the tranny pan parallel to the frame and you're good to go.
