I don't have the car in front of me so I'm doing all the research I can do (it's at the in laws about 30 mins. away) will the stock drive line work with a aod? it origianly had a 3 speed (I doubt it's the right size but I gotta ask) and if it wont work is there another drive line that will or will I have to have mine shortened? thanks!
The AOD is going to be longer than the three speed. You will have to shorten the original drive shaft.
AOD's that came from a full size car are about 1 1/2" longer than a Mustang or Cougar AOD.I used a 1986 Crown Vic drive shaft in my '54 which has the correct front yoke, in my case I had to have it shortened 1 1/4" since I have it bolted up to the stock 4:10 '54 rear, I used a conversion U-joint to bolt up the rear NEAPCO 2-2091.My AOD sits right on the stock '54 crossmember and uses an ANCHOR 2253 mount available at Autozone, lots of info here:http://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/DanJonesC4AODswap.html also your donor AOD may need the shift lever modified depending on what shifter you use.
Thanks for the info, I figured I would have to have it shorten. I just thought there might be some thing out there that would work, ohh well. I'm going to put a floor shifter in it so the linkage shouldent be a problem.
Pick out the shifter before you install the AOD,some shifters like B&M have to have a lever kit installed in the valve body before you can hook up the shifter,it is a lot easier to do it out of the car.
The aod is already in the car, I was thinking lokar. they seem ok any one have any problems with them?
Have one in our '62 F-100 with a 4R70W electronic O.D. No problems, pretty happy with it. Did have to change the selector shaft in the trans which necessitated dropping the pan.
