You will see my album pics I posted above of my "rattle can" paint job on my "54 since I am on a tight budget and I wanted the OEM enamel look what you see is a lot of priming and sanding and 16 cans of Krylon "PeekaBoo Blue" and 7 cans of Satin White wet sanded between coats with 2000 and a light sanding of 2500 on the last coat then buffed with Meguiars pre-wax and finished with Mother's Gold.
Jeff - You are the "fearless leader" of this group - no one should ever question why..... Old school, innovative.......and a lot of hard work. Congratulations!
That is unbelievable. I actually thought you had clear coated the paint too, until you explained that its just wax.
looks good, ive told people before this can be done and they dont beleive me, just have to use good paint to pull it off and take your time and do it right. way to go glad you showed it can be done.
I think this is good alternative for someone on a budget and some of the newer urethane paints are very toxic so unless you have the right safety equipment which can get expensive they should be avoided.A lot of the paint I did in my sons carport so there was fresh air I hung a large drop cloth in place to keep the dust down and wet down the floor also and old trick to keep down the static electricity from attracting gunk is hanging a chain off the bumper,I still used a good quality 3M mask when spraying. Also those clip on handles for the spray cans gives you better control and the fan spray nozzles are a plus. The Krylon dries fast but I like to allow about 2 days between coats before wet sanding. Thanks for all the compliments!
Jeff, if the paint job looks as good in the flesh as it does in the pictures, you have done an amazing job. Here in Oz the spray paint generally is sold in cans holding about 5 ozs and cost about $15. You don't have to be a mathematician to work out it is probably cheaper to use a regular spray gun and compressor. You have however certainly proved the pont that it is possible to get a great result out of a can. The secret is of course, preparation and taking your time. Regards
I got lucky and happened to be in Kmart when they marked the Krylon down 1/2 price so 10 cans of it only cost a $1.75 each, they have switched over to Rustolem. The rest was at Wally World for $2.99.
I reckon you stole that paint at that price. Here in Oz a bottle of touch up paint in a bottle about the size of a woman's nail varnish bottle can run in to $15. I think your score was definitely a case of right place/right time. Regards
Yes WoW! Would've never guessed it was outta a can. WIll that same process work for flat black? I used good old house paint with a roller and it doesn't look to bad,I just hated the paint that was on it originally and i wanted to cover up all the exposed rust for the winter, seeing as its my daily driver her in wisconsin
Really looks good Jeff. I have been contemplating doing the roof on my 56 and was wondering how many cans would be needed. I guess it's 7. Thanks.
I remember back in my mis-spent youth in the Corps, the highest compliment a Marine could be paid on an inspection was one word; "Noteworthy." This applies here Jeff. A noteworthy job! Cheers, Jim
If you decide to do something like this use a primer close in shade to the color you are going to use, in my case the blue has grey primer and the roof has white primer. One thing about using the Krylon is the colors are pretty consistent, imperfections will show up that are not visible in primer but show through in the color. When that happens you can always resand and respray.
Jeff - now that you've had this paint on for a while, what do you think? Any observations? How is it holding up to the weather? Especially that AZ sun.
The Satin white on the roof looks real good the Peekaboo blue tends to dull but comes back when waxed but needs waxing monthly I have used turtle wax paste and Mother's Carnuba Gold with a Meguiars pre cleaner and wax no real difference,I am going to touch up a few spots and try Armorall synthetic wax.
It's looks really good. I'm surprised it only took 23 cans total to paint the entire car. How many coats did it get?
