I was trying but not succeeding in removing the Torque Converter/ fluid coupler from my Desoto 330. Does anybody now how this thing is attached? I figured it just slid on but I did not want to pry too hard incase there was a snap ring or something. Thanks for the help.

Should be nuts or bolts that you can get to between the engine block and the flexplate.

there's one of them things laying in my yard, I think it has studs that go thru the crankshaft flange. Maybe take off the sheet metal cover that's bolted to the aluminum plate, just behind the oil pan, and take the nuts off from there?

Yup, I'm betting the converter/ring gear is studded and you'll have to unbolt it from the crank flange. It's a real PITA. Good luck.

I think I remember my buddy bitching about taking one off his 392. A long flat wrench between the engine and flexplate to undo the nuts.

its bolted to the back of the crank, seems like you have to remove the trans to block adapter to get it off.

yep, your converter bolts straight to the crank. no you dont need to pull the adapter plate first. there is no flexplate on the powerflite converters. the converter itself is studded and youll need a long wrench to reach up in the gap in the adapter plate to get at the nuts to the "inside" of the crank flange. this would be the side closest to the motor.

and if you think this is gonna be fun, wait til you pull the adapter hub (the thing holding you up from pulling the front timing cover) off the front of the crank. lots of PB Blaster, some heat from a torch and a very stout bearing puller "might" get that off for ya.

Thanks for the help guys; I'll get at it in the morning. I just got a propane forced air heater so working in the garage in the winter is now a more viable option.

Hey Farmer I'm from Gladwin. What's your location?

It would not have been so bad if the engine had been on my engine stand. BUT, it would not fit on the stand with the torque converter attached.

Where do guys get your Desoto hemi parts? Hot Heads?

    Thanks again for the help.

  17. totally unrelated to torque converters,but...... I need a passenger side exhaust manifold for a 291 desoto hemi from 1955 or 56. any help? r.r.

I just found this thread, yes! I'm at the point where I need to remove the torque converter/ fluid coupler from my Desoto 291 but wasn’t sure how to go about it.
Thank you all and thank this site!

It's pretty hard to beat the price of Falconglobal on Ebay for a stock rebuild.

Back in my mechanic days working on any Chrysler product was a total pain. Like they built the car around the part you need to take off....
