I've got the ford-o-matic trans that came out of my 54 but I'm not sure if it's the one I need to go with. What are ya'll running, why and what's the pricing, modifications, and advantages? Thanks for replying.
I'm running my stock ford-o-matic, and its on it's last leg. I'm going to a t-5 here shortly, I figure I'll have around a grand in the swap, if not a taste over (using a used transmission). My dad has a Y powered model a, with 4.27 gears, and the .68 to 1 final drive makes it a fun-fun car. So I hope with me 3.31 gear set, I'll have a real high-way machine
I'm running a 69 FMX with a B&M shift kit behind my 312, 325 gears in rear end in my 54 Crestline. Many years alot of miles (50k +)with no trouble.
Actually you can use just about any trans you want with an adapter . there are not hard to come by and easy to buy . Most either use a AOD trans , T5 trans or 4 speed top loader trans . If you like a standard shift I personally love a 4 speed but the T5 will be cheaper and better on gas . If you want an auto trans then the AOD is the way to go for that . You can also use a C4 trans if you like that one over the overdrive trans . Hope that helps . Jim
I'm running the stock manual 3 speed. Real pain in the *** as you have to come to a complete stop to shift into 1st gear (not synchronized). 5 speed one would be great!
Early toploader behind the 272 in wifeys '55 ranchwagon and a 4 speed Zodiac ( Late '60s english ford) behind the 368 Lincoln Y block in my '53 F100 .

You need to learn to double clutch. Try this; with the car warmed up at engine idle in gear driving, notice your speed in relation to the ground, or watch the speedo. The next time you come to a stop sign, when the car gets to that speed, quickly let the clutch out in nutral, then push it in and the trans will drop into gear. Practice makes perfect, after a few times you can do it with no noise. My car has a Tremmec 3550. In todays world, no car should be without an overdrive.
Stock original (probably) Fordomatic. Mine shifts fine actually, but yeah I know it saps lots of power and she's not as happy on the Jersey Turnpike as I'd like. I'm hunting for a good running used Y Block as my 239 smokes like a cigar convention, when I do that I am planning on going with an AOD. When the weather is nice I do drive this thing a good thousand+ miles a month.
I'm running the stock 3 on the tree,I love it! It's just a blast to shift gears like that, except the no syncro in first that's a drag, but otherwise a 3 on the tree is just old school and you can't beat that.
My 56 has a stock FOM, my 54 runs a FOM/FMX hi bred. The FMX is a great conversion for a daily driver...
'60 Ctuise O Matic in my '55. Auto first gear is nice and it breathes easy at 75mph with 3.00 rear cogs.
T5.. Lower 1st gear to get off the nline (3.73 rear gears) and the .67:1 OD cruises 70 MPH @ 2000 RPM.
