well, it might be the spring pad mount bushings worn out or missing. and loose ubolts.the rear end has rubber mount pads with oval shapes that go between the spring and axle. i would look there first.

The spring center bolt interlocks with a hole in the spring pad on the axle preventing events such as yours. Something is amiss in your setup, but I can't imagine what it might be. The spring bolt can't be missing...can it? That's the only way it would come apart in the way you describe. If the spring bolt is missing, replace it and all will be well...

I agree with Missysdad. I just completed redoing both front and rear suspensions on my '54 and I would say that your center bolt is missing or not long enough to keep this from happening. If you can take pictures of what it looks like, it makes things easier for everyone to help with advice.

On my 55, I removed the rubber pads. I have the spring bolt seated dirrectly in the axle pad hole. Tighten the U bolts, then check them again after a hundred miles or so. I did not notice more noise in the car as I expected from doing this.

I agree with Don and remove the rubber and maybe even replace the "U" bolts with new ones to make sure they aren't stretching from old age .
If you get the rear where you want it and to be sure it won't move again , just tack weld it in a couple places to keep is secured . You can always cut the welds if you need to remove the rear later down the road .

Alright after reading all the comments and taking a good hard look I realized the spring center bolt wasn't inside that hole on the rear end pad because there are blocks in between the spring center bolt was sitting inside another whole on the block and it seems that the block slipped over the spring center bolt. Thanks for the advice guys im heading back under the car to fix it wish me luck i need it with this car.
