Is there any interest in old license plates? primarily 1960's-1970's-80's mostly midwest states arkansas/missouri/tenneessee/texas/oklahoma/louisana?
Neat way to do the swap meets, easy to pack up when your' ready to go home. I know a half dozen guys into it and they have a ball trading them.
]Is there any interest in old license plates?...........QUOTE][/QUOTE] I like to get them for wall hangers, usually the more recent ones are worthless, if they arent from Calif, I buy them. Must be cheapy cheap! Dont toss them out, someone will buy them.
I've been swapping and collecting a few to make this, what do you guys think? I've got about half the plates I need to start another. I have a few to trade as well.
License plates are an interesting collectible. Lots of traders around the world. Some places, like England, sell the plate with the registration and I've seen ads for 100's of pounds for a desired plate number. Some people collect themes, or every plate from a state, etc. I just collect plates from places I've been or friends have brought me from their travels and nail them on the door of my shop. My best plate is one I picked up in 1972 in Ft. Smith,NWT. It's a polar bear shaped plate and is probably worth about $60 but it ain't for sale, and no, my sister who's been after it for 33 years can't have it, either.
i would like to get a set or one 1951 tn.plate for a truck i'm building. what is the going price for such a plate? al sisson mosheim,tn.
If you are looking for plates they are all over eBay, each state has its own section. That map of the USA made from plates is a really nice idea.
www.alpca.org I'm member #9993 and we have gone well over 10,000 world wide. I'd also like a list with prices if you are interested in selling.
Here are a couple of interesting plate links: Drew's PLATESTAND - Northwest Territories license plates for sale then you can get to his regular page if you don't like the NWT stuff PlatesUSA - THOUSANDS of Genuine License Plates for Sale
Didn't mean to hijack the thread. I have Alaska and Hawaii on seperate panels, just never got around to hanging them yet. Can ya beleive the wife let me hang it in the hallway? 38ford I have no idea. I did get most of the plates from friends and relatives. I think I had to buy 3/4 on Ebay. Once I collected all fitty states I just did it a few at a time with tin snips. After they were all cut they sat in a shoebox forgotten about for 8-9 months till I got bored again and finished it. Desertrat, I also have no idea! I'd like to do another though.
I like the idea a lot, was wondering if you were involved in this one also? http://tinyurl.com/9jxng (offsite link)
I think your license plate map is one of the coolest pieces of art I've seen in a very long time. I was watching one of those decorating shows on HGTV a week or so ago and in the background on the wall was a car made out of license plates. I hit the drv and started recording so I could capture it. I've got it paused in an exact spot for the best view. I'm going to see if I can take a photo of it. I was planning on trying to recreate it for my kitchen wall. That was until I saw yours. While the car one was cool, your one of the USA is much cooler. I really like to travel and I try to pick up license plates from each state when I p*** thru. I don't usually pay more then $5 each. I'd love to be able to display them in a map form like you did. I might give it a shot if you don't mind. Any hints you might want to share. Anything that you'd do different then the first time? I've never counted all my plates but I'm sure my collection is tiny compared to most. I do have the Canadian one (mentioned previously) shaped like a bear in excellent shape. I also have about 8 or 10 Australian ones from the different states and one of my most favorites is a yellow 1940 Phillipine one also in excellent shape. I found it on a wall in a barn of a junkyard in Ohio. I got it for $10. I'd do some horse trading of my extra USA ones if anyone is interested.
Are you the vendor that was selling these at the Timonium show a few weeks ago. If so you had 2 different sizes of this for sale. Rhode Island was cool...just the letter R
After checking out this link, I really don't think I can make it for less then it can be purchased for......not even considering the time involved.
I would be interested in any 1960 or 1966 plates. Please email me with what you have and prices please.
I realize this is a VERY old thread, but I'm collecting up plates to do another map. This one will be displayed outside and allowed to 'weather' therefore I'm looking for plates where the name of the state is stamped or embossed, not just a decal/silk screen. I'm trying to do this on the cheap, most plates I've either gotten free or for $1 apiece. Condition is un-important as long as the state name is embossed. I also have plates to trade, especially quite a few Tennessee plates. SO, any of you license plate collectors would willing to help out? Would be cool to have HAMBers involved. Of course I'll pay for shipping, etc. I presently need; AK, DE, HI, ID, KS, LA, ME, MD, MA, MT, NE, NH, NM, OR, RI, UT and WV. BTW Mods - if these seems like too much of a 'wanted' ad I'll be happy to delete/move it. Thanks!
I got a pair of '32 and '40 Washington plates out in my garage. Im still debating on whether to hang em up out there or sell em.
