I wasn't sure it was going to happen when Sam pointed me in the direction of a '56 list in the "Craig's List" ads for $500, but I called and it wasnt gone yet. That was on Monday. I called everyday to make sure it wasn't gone yet and it was there. At the same time "Evil T" Jason posted a bigwindow cab for free in the cl***ifieds and I told him I'd take it. Well, like a kid on Christmas I set off with my dad this morning at 4am on a 700 mile round trip that would take 16 hours and we hauled *** the whole way up and back and loaded both pieces on the trailer. Thank god my dad p***ed down this obsession and totally undertands the madness. The truck turned out to be totally complete and with the other cab I have all the pieces (already have another running '56 ch***is with a 283, big window gl***, clean original seat and all the original chrome trim from another project), so it should go together pretty easy. I can't remember the last time I saw original '56 rims on a '56 truck and that's what wanted. Need a rear fender without the spare and a radiator and I'll be close to 100%. Thanks everyone that helped me find my new "dream truck".
I don't know, I like them too. But I don't care for the big back windows. Had one, and it felt like the whole world can see inside. And they have more of a ..... I don't know how to describe it..... Grandpa at***ude. More cute than tough. I'm sorry Jim, I didn't mean to sound like I was hammering on your new toy! Good looking truck and I know you'll have a blast with it!
Nice truck. Cut the spare tire well out of the fender and fab it in as a whole one. It's a lot easier than it sounds. On the AD style trucks you can cut the piece out and re-use it, I think not on yours, but it's not that hard. A new steel fender is like $400 I think?
Congrat Jim on the new project, those are my favor trucks.... you gonna build this on in the driveway? do you kicking everyone out of the garage? For inspiration I have ***embled a few pics..
I'm not a fan of the big back window either... Too modern looking for my taste..... I've always been afraid to chop one of these, but they look great dropped...
JimA, glad you can use the cab. I guess the timing was perfect on the cab giveaway. Good luck with the project...EVILT
No- they wouldn't have me anyway. I'm happy where I'm at. I will be a "Rod & Custom" late 50's style truck, not a "laid out" modern style truck. Thanks for the pictures guys. What are those wheels on the grey primered g***er? Never seen those before.
Congratulations on your score, Jim. Funny. I read the text of your post the way it came up on the screen; couldn't see the pictures yet. When I scrolled down to see the pictures it was a big surprise -- I had imagined an F-100 with a 283, big back window, fender with a tire well, everything fit for a Ford. Surprise!
So all you need is a fender and a radiator. I can talk to steve next week. he was shut down for the holidays. Man 500 for that truck is a deal even with my luck and connectuions on finding stuff. Let me know if you want to make a late 50's C6 truck ch***is. (haha) If you need some other parts or need some info on what fits on those things, I have built 6 of them this year. Congrats on the FIND. If you change you mind, Here is some recents pics of my not so traditional 57. http://www.lateral-g.net/members/lee/ Rodger
Wow Rodger!!! You REALLY need to get some shots of that to Rob Fortier. That thing is going to be wicked. Most of the sheetmetal needs help so I am looking for cleaner doors and fenders, I just knew I would need a ton of small pieces even if I found some clean sheetmetal. So right now my wish list would be a pair of nice door shells, a driver's side rear fender and a p***enger side front fender- oh and a V-8 radiator. Any leads would be great.
That's a great looking project! And a hell of a deal too. When I first got mine I wished it was a big back window, but now I like them both in their own way. My friend that turned me on to this board (OneTireFire) just got a 56 that is chopped and chaneled, it's pretty wild. Good luck on your project! Jim
We have a 58 big window. They bring more money. The 56 will bring more than our 58. The dual headlights always seemed to kill the look. Nice project....well worth the money.
JimA, Maybe I will take the 6 pack you offered...If I find anything else for it, I will let you know. EVILT
Now....How about doing a series on the "Nouveau R&C Dream Truck" for the next three or four years. A step by step progress thing, just like the old mag. Maybe some far out new design by Thom Taylor; something like that. Just a thought. pigpen
I think I would have trouble with that one- there weren't 4 other truck magazine ***les in the same company 50 years ago.
Jim, What a *****en truck!!! We did the same thing @ Cooks a couple years back for Paul, switched out the small window cab for the big window one, put the old one behind the shop even chained to the building, came in one morning & it was gone, sawed off chain & all! I wasn't finished with it yet. It's on the Cook's Machine Works Website, but the 2 tone color wasn't my idea. It's an all updated deal. I would have rather had one like the you bought, cept painted Cook's/Cyclone green= I myself had a 57 Big Window back 85-89, Girlfriend was on the ***le and she thought that it should go, a few months she was gone as a result . Call or email me when you wanna meet for burgers @ Bob's ok.
