my 56 tbird motor just quit running, it is in a 54 mercury, i cant get any spark out of the coil, It has been running fine , just sputtered & quit , no spark no matter what I do, new coil ,points ,condersor, plugs ,wires , cap, is there a ground strap going from the motor to the ch***is? I dont see one on this car? the motor is not out of timing , m does any one have any ideas? this car is 6 volt postive ground , thanks Stan
With a test light and the key on do you have voltage at the coil? The new coil is 6 volt right? If no voltage at the coil back track look for voltage at the solenoid, put the test light to the "ign" terminal on the solenoid and have someone turn the key on and off.
thanks dwaynerz, the new coil is 6 volt, looked and at this point I dont see a loose or corroded connections, I am going to get a ch***is to motor ground strap today, and put it on tonight , hope it works ! this car is a calf. car with no rust the wiring loos good thanks Stan
dwaynerz,JeffB2 , Hi well I put the ground strap on but still no spark , I will have to get a wiring dia. and start there ! thanks both of you for the help , I will let you know when I get this solved , thanks again any one have a any ideas let me know , Stan
Years ago I learned a valuable lesson - just because an ignition part is new, that doesn't mean it isn't the problem. If you still have the old parts, it's probably worth swapping them out one at a time.
i hate electrical problems. they cause me to pull the most hair out the fastest. a tool or 3 has been launched across the garage in my younger days.
Well , still no luck with the merc I pulled the dist. & took the coil into the oldest parts supplier in this area , checked them they are both fine ,I have 6 volts to the coil but no output ? I installed frame to motor ground strap the battery is positive ground to the motor, & also a new engine to body ground strap , not at all sure what to do next? any one have any ideas ! this car has been driven on & off for the last 6 months & ran well & just quit running , nothing I have done has made one bit of diffrence, does anyone have a wireing diagram for a 1954 montery thank for your help Stan
Have you run a jump wire from the positive on the battery to the positive on the coil and tried cranking it ? This will byp*** the ignition circuit so if there is a fault there it will run . If it does then you need to look at the ignition switch and all points between that and the coil .
My 55 recently quit at a stop light. No spark out of the coil. All the wires looked intact, so we took it home on a stretcher. Put the coil in the vice and hooked the test light to the points lead, and nothing. Hooked the test light to the points and all is fine. The wire inside the end at the points had broken, but the plastic insulation held it together. Imagine that, after only 56 years the wire broke!!
Ole don is right on about the dist lead being broken inside the dist. I have seen this happen many times. When I worked as a parts counterman I sold many of them as they break the wire inside the insulation from the dist points plate pivoting back and forth untill the wire breaks. Or it could be rubbing and wore the insulation off the wire. Be sure to check it out.
Stan, With no spark.I put a test light on the postive side of the coil first. If it lights then, I go to the negative side. With the engine cranking it should flash on and off.If it stays on then the points are not closeing. If it does not light at all,you have an open in the primary windings of the coil. Good luck to ya.
