Ha, made ya look.... But seriously, I was thinking of using the 9 inch out of my 1992 f150(2 wheel drive ) for my car. Other than the ring n pinion gear size and possibly the over all length of the axles, is there anything else that migjt make a 9 from a truck less desirable than one from a car?

You are going to have to cut the rear down and get new axles if you use a truck rear . They are too wide for a car . In the end it will cost you more that you think to get that rear to fit . If you search the STICKY post the group has , you will see what rears fit the best for the car you have and what rears to look for . It's about 1/2 way through the post I think . I posted it there so people can see what rears will work the best for their builds and what cars they come from .
If you can find a 9" rear from a early Mustang or Cougar that will be a good fit without having to cut the rear down to fit if you are lucky . Guys usually don't want to part with them .
Honestly , unless you are building a big hp engine with lots of torque , Just pick up a Ford 8" rear from a Maverick , Mustang , Cougar and some other that will fit right under that car and those Ford 8" rears will hold a lot more torque & HP that people give them credit for ! You can usually score a good 8" rear from $100 to $200 for a complete rear .
I have one sitting in my parts shed for my 55 if that Dana rear does break which I bet will last another 50+ years !
    Just my opinion .

The axles tubes are typically 3 1/4" while most hot rod suspension brackets are made for the standard 3" OD. Depending on what type of suspension you want to run this could be an issue.

While I have not done it myself the Explorer 8.8 rear end is a popular junk yard model. They usually have decent gear ratio's and posi in some of them. There was a good post recently about sizes etc.

Edit: Found one of the sites....Here is some good tech on reading codes and axle sizes etc.

Wheel bolt pattern may be different. For a long time, the trucks were 5 1/2 vs 4 1/2. Not sure when they stopped this.

My personal choice is a 9" from a '57-'59 Ford p***enger car, they bolt right in with little modifications. Everyone says they are expensive and getting hard to find but I bought one a few years ago for $100, I've seen them listed here in the HAMB cl***ifieds pretty reasonable.

My second choice would be the '77-'81 Ford Granada and the Lincoln Versailles 9' rear, these bolt in with some modifications and they have much stronger axles than the earlier '57-'59 rear. The Versailles rear comes standard with disc brakes, I bought one from our local You-Pull-It yard a few years ago for $75.

Both of the rears that I talked about have the correct 4 1/2" bolt pattern for '52-'59 Ford p***enger cars.
