  1. Buying on eBay off Topic? Only to a narrow mind.

Yeah but wait a second guys. It is easy for us to second guess the scenario now but at the time I could see myself getting "Sucked-in" just like the others did. When you read the guy's feedback --AND his listing, I don't see anything that makes me cringe. Matter of fact, his Feedback was very strong when the scam was introduced!! It is plausable that a guy bought a case quantity from his employer (who we don't know whether he works for a electronic's store or what) and decided to sell outside of the bosses market ...or even if he is selling them for his boss. It would be believable to me if he would have written that his Boss had to order 3 extra cases of IPods to be able to get another 20% off on the wholesale price and thus are passing the savings on. Remember there is too much legitimate "new electronics" sold on eBay for that to be a "Red Flag" in my eyes. That is the problem with electronic forums and service providers, you just do not know who is a terrorist, a scam artist, or whatever due to the anonomity of each of us when we make posts.

Also, the PayPal deal (or lack of) is believable that he has had issues so he wanted to steer clear of eBay's PayPal. Him accepting a personal check or a Postal M.O. could easily be construed as a legitmate deal because there is a "paper trail" involving a check. To me a Postal M.O. is the easiest to hide behind because at all three Post Offices I can go to, they require no form of ID to cash them. Even if they did, he had the proper I.D. and credentials for them to cash them for him. Heck, he even gave some Buyers his telephone number. What if you had called him and he answered the questions you had with some sort of legitimate sounding answers?

I might also say that for me, I buy from many eBayers that are not that computer savy and do not understand modern techinques. Old timers that have been collecting car parts for 40-50 years and are in their 70s and want to clean out their garage before moving to a retirement home. I don't know the proper answer but the advise about not being too careful is prudent advise but even the suspecting can get taken.

It does make you wonder what the U.S. will be like in another 20-30 years doesn't it? Just the moral decline that I have seen prevail in the short 45 years of my existance makes me wonder if we keep going at the same rate, just what kind of shape will be be in? I grew up in a suburb of Houston but I can remember a time when we left the keys in our vehicles, or didn't lock the door of the house when we went on a short trip. I never heard of road rage, and a drive-by shooting was what a drunk Texas redneck did to a street sign from the seat of his pick-up truck. :p Man I can even remember going to a store and my folks would write a blank Bank counter check that the store clerk would give them to fill out. You think they would allow THAT to happen these days?

So let me set the stage for another possible scam. A month or two ago at the Hershey swap meet many of us attended, I took a 1931 Model A Coupe to sell. I had it fairly priced at about $14K. Had many people looking and it did sell to a fellow from Maine however I did not know him from "Adam". I also had a few people that wanted to write me a check which I politely declined for obvious reasons. I also had some that were interested in paying with Traveler's checks. To me, those are about as scary as the personal checks with modern day colored printers and such. Yep, good old American 'greenbacks' is what I wanted to exchange for the title until I got to thinking that what if those were phoney too? This came to me laying in the motel bed one nite so the next morning I stopped by Wal-Mart to find one of those marking pens. Wal-Mart didn't carry them --and I couldn't even coax a store clerk to let me "borrow" one. Went to Office Depot too and they didn't have them. Every gas station, convienence store, and even fast food rest. had them but you could not buy one anywhere when I desperately needed it in a hurry. Thus I wound up holding one hundred and thirty something 100 dollar bills up to the sunlight to see if it had the metal strip inside --and then not knowing for sure if those were legitimate. So what do you do? The guy seemed honest, ...said he brought a car to Carlisle to sell and was looking for something he could buy to replace it. He took the money from another source so he was assuming it was good currency too, --and there is no telling how many $100.00 bills exchanged hands at Hershey last October without being checked. All it would have taken is for someone as common looking as the guy next door to print up $250K of phoney bills and go on a buying spree.

Same thing at the Street Rod Nats. How many high-dollar transactions take place there? Funny thing with most transactions like these is the fact that the Seller very rarely ever deposits his 'wad of cash' that he just netted. Instead he hides it from Uncle Sam and uses it as funding for his next project and spends small amounts here and there buying stuff. If he did get a bad load of cash, I think it would be pretty hard to trace unless he get's unlucky, and with title swapping/fabrication on early iron, be kinda hard to trace who he sold his "ride" to if the Buyer did not want his true identity to be known to the Seller. Therefore with the money not immediately deposited, the bank or Gov't. cannot verify the funds are indeed legitimate ...or to see how the Seller came about getting it. Then even more disturbing is what would you do if you sold your ride for $50K in cash and then later you suspected (or found) it was phoney? Would you go to the authorities where they will confiscate it and you are out everything? Would you try to discretely spend the money in small amounts so you do not take a huge loss nor a chance on getting caught?

 Tough call to make when that amount could be "life changing"!!!

  4. Actually, it wasn’t a ‘response’. It was 'directed' to (any and) all of the air-headed nit-wits talking about something that (they don’t want to talk about), but chime in anyhow with two-cents worth about something being ‘Off Topic’, ‘non-traditional’. Get it?

I relized that soon after I posted, my apologies. Seems as if everyone jumps on the band wagon on this site when one calls another out. A real shame.

It's sad to think you NEED to check these things! I know exactly where your comming from. At Fall Jefferson swap meet I had alot of stuff for sale and everyone wanted to pay with check. I didn;t feel comfortable with that at ALL after seeing my uncle lose out on check deals before.

And those money markers are damn near impossible to find locally, I wonder if they can even be found online? I have wanted to get a box for some time now, especially after selling a 92 cavilear for 2 grand and having the bank find 800 of it was phoney

I bought one of those marking pens for $5 about 2 weeks ago at Staples Office Supply. Our local Walmart had them too. The peice of mind was worth the money.

Just for the record, I don't buy car parts off egay. Bought a car or two, and was nervious until they showed up in the driveway.

And, if you were planning on selling $150 items online, what is the safest method for both parties? I don't intend on screwing anyone, but I sure don't want to get screwed either. Seem what is best for me, the seller, won't be for the buyer. Where is the best comprimise for both?

I know a lot of people will say different, but Paypal has worked GREAT for me for the last 5 years without a hiccup. Lots of people have stories about having money held up in there account, but I never have. Whenever I've had a problem they helped take care of it. Just this week I had an item that was bought and paid for on 12-5 but never recieved it and I couldn't get the seller to answer my emails. I filed a complaint with Paypal and 5 minutes later he emailed me saying he was sorry and it would be in the mail today. If it doesn't arrive within a week, Paypal will refund my money to me.

Whenever I sell a car on ebay I ask them to send a deposit thru ebay and bring the rest in cash. I take down all of their info and write up a bill of sale so in case there is a problem I have something to back me up. If there is a problem, like counterfit money, it might not get it back for me, but at least I can show the nice police officer that I didn't print it up myself.;)

  14. I saw this. it's practically local. This cop will never live this down. You know how cops like to kid each other in that gentle manner of theirs. Oh the shame! Oh the humanity!

What's up with Garrison Keillor and PHC?

I love the look in Wile E. Coyote's eyes in the third panel. It isn't fear that he's about to be blown up, it's that look of dim recognition ("I've fucked up again") of his own ineptitude.
The situation is a little different than most others. Usually W.E. falls victim to the complexity of his schemes. The fuse on the motar burns much too slow. The solid ground he is stamping upon reveals itself to be a fragile rock ledge, a bolt works loose on a wheel of the rocket sled all resulting in calamity and hilarity.
In this case W.E. reveals his core incompetance. The simple proceedure of pulling the pin and throwing the grenade proves to be too much for him. Given the choice between two items he chooses the wrong one. Given a 50-50 shot at sucess he fails. Pull-pin/throw grenade. How can you screw that up?

All of this reveals much about the underlying personality of this character. Megalo-maniac to be sure. MAd creative genious of course. Potential hot rodder and HAMB member? Definately.

    I hereby nominate...
