Those early Ford jacks were totally unsafe and tip easily,I would only use one for show but never to raise the car.
I'd be curious to see what the original one looks like. I don't think the one I have is the right one.
I think I have the original from my '56 tucked away somewhere. I'll try and dig it out this weekend and snap a few pics. I would ***ume it would be the same as the '55.
Is there another jack that you recommend to keep in the car in case of a flat? I know I cant get my rear tires off by jacking up the axel.
Here's a picture from the '56 owners manual: http://www.tocmp.com/manuals/Ford/1956/Owners/pages/Page31_jpg.htm For those that haven't seen it before, there's some great reading here: http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/
I never did find the one I thought I had but there is one on Ebay for sale right now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-1956-F...Parts_Accessories&hash=item565043c58e&vxp=mtr
Holy ****, I'll throw some spray paint on my old junker and sell it to you for $149 if you are interested.. I have one but like Bomb said I don't know if it is original. It does look like the one in the ebay ad. To me it looks like the standard Ford jack that came in many of cars over the years. I also agree with Jeff that they are crazy unsafe but sometimes you have to use what you have to use and it can be a real problem getting the wheels out from the rear fender wells on many old Fords. I use a floor jack and go under the frame right in front of the rear wheels. It is pretty close to the rocker panel . They make small portable 2-2 1/2 Ton size floor jacks and that is what I used to carry around. You could also use a bottle jack in the same area but to me bottle jacks are just as unsafe as the factory jack. They will fall over just as easily. Now that I think about it I bet you could use a new style scissor jack in the same place on the frame. Are you looking for originality or function?
Like Jay I advise jacking up from the frame in front of the rear wheels, this is a good compact unit http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...rch_trolley+jack_-1_3092&keyword=trolley+jack this is a more study unit and will raise 15.5" The cheaper jacks they have that run $30-$40 that O'Reilly, Autozone and Harbor Freight sell max at 13" which won't cut it,you should keep a compact jack stand in the trunk also.
On my 43 I use 2 jacks, 1 in front of axle, and one on the axle at the other side, then the wheel just clears of the fender.
i got one in my 1952 customline that never been took out it still sits in the trunk all fastened down sence 1952 the original owner told me . he never used it .
