My 53 Ford 6cyl quit on me the other day. Second time in two years that the starter has given up. I'm running 12volts through a 6 volt starter. It has been running this way for over 25 years. My question is, will a starter from 56 Ford 6cyl bolt up to a 53?

Didn't you put on a new one last time?

Starter probably need new brushes. Not hard to change. You will not out anything but your time if it doesn't work. Worth a shot!
