Just wondering about shooting clearcoat over one shot striping paint. Suggestions on what to avoid or what to use? A friend of mine sprayed clear over some he did and it reacted badly with the striping paint.

Put a couple of drops of urethane hardener in your One Shot (use the same hardener that goes in your clear) I did my bike tank this way and it worked fine.
I cleared it the next day,go light on your first coat of clear and let it flash about 20 minutes, then put the rest on normaly.
It worked for me but there are no guarantees in the paint game:rolleyes:

Oh yeah, don't put the hardener in the whole can of One Shot unless you plan on using it all,but you already knew that right....:D

  5. that works MOST of the time. if ya got big bucks in your paint and want the stripes under the clear, be safe and use HOK pinstripe paint. wrinkels will fuck up your day every time!

If the stripin is already there and you don't know if it has had a hardener put in it, try using a clear that doesn't require a reducer to thin it....Reducer is usually the Achilles heel......But, it is a crapshoot

Well, I want to clear over stripes that I laid out already. They do NOT have hardner in the one shot. There's no gauranteed method?

It's on my buddy's pool table and we striped the whole top rail so I'd hate to have to start over.

Dust on the first few coats real DRY,to create a barrier, let them flash off,
    then spray it wet.
The drier the 1-Shot,and the drier the first few coats of clear, the better
    your chances.

At this point, there is no 100% guaranteed method.

Since it's a pool table (indoors) use a bargain-basement single stage type clear. Something cheap like thay sell at NAPA stores. Lay some lines on a test panel and try it 1st. Otherwise, 1st coats "dry" last coat nice, lotsa flash.

  10. Find a sign supply house and get a can of Frog Juice clear spray. I know you think I am making up that name, but it is a clear often used by sign painters, nice gloss and won't lift the paint.

Unless your friends are all complete Animals, and beat the Shit
out of the pool table, you could probably get away without clearing
    over the stripes at all.

  12. Seeing as how it's on a pool table(the wooden part I assume),I would go to the local hardware store and buy some urethane brushing paint and lay it on with a brush or small foam roller. Most of the urethanes I've used haven't reacted with 1-Shot.I'd do a test piece though to be sure.

for that app. you could use 1-shot clear coat. Get it from a sign shop.

well, it needs to be cleared because of the basecoat needing it more so than just wanting to clear it. I agree that just the stripes shouldn't need it but it's a metallic base that flakes on your hand without clearcoat.

I've had good luck with Varathane Clear, but it doesn't dry
as hard as an Automotive finish.

I made a scooter for my boy years ago. Made a plywood "surfboard" deck for it. I striped it then cleared over it with garden variety varnish. It's just an enamel based clear just like the striping paint.
