I am doing the mock-up for my motor mounts on my Av8 project and I located the front of the motor mount 3" from the center of the radiator hole in the crossmember. this makes it so I clear the firewall (31 roadster) , My question is is the engine far enough to the rear as It looks tight in the front. I realize I will have to fabricate most of the fan ***embly . I just don't want to start the crossmember mounting and driveshaft shortening if the motor is too far ahead. I appreciate any thoughts or ideas anyone has..

Try a search. This question comes up every so often. Great question, its just that I still havent seen a definate answer.

Good luck. My advise would be to mock it all up.

I don't know the answer, but they have a section on motor mounts in "the book" how to build a traditional AV8 hotrod.

I used the dimension of 3" from the center of radiator mount hole to the front of the motor mount( from the Bishop/Tardel book) seems like good clearance at the firewall, but will be a challenge in the fan area any thoughts or input on this? thanks

  5. If I were doing it, I wouldn't use anybody else's measurements. I would put the radiator where I wanted it. The motor would be next, and I'd make damned sure it had enough room for the fan, with a 1/2 inch extension on the pullley. After the ch***is was done and I was happy with that, pinon angles, motor tilt, (carb boss level) with wheels on the ground, etc. All of that before worrying about the firewall clearance. Then; I'd mount the body and worry about the firewall, that can be changed to fit any situation. I hear too often, 'coulda', 'shouda', 'woulda'. If there is any sacrifice here I would be doing that at the firewall, not at the radiator.

I kinda have to agree with b29chevy with your own measurements.. I think the book is a great resource and would just use it for general dems. The way I have done it is mount or place the body were she is gonna be and then the rad/shell.. Then get the motor as close to the firewall as you can without any interference. You might want to run a electric fuel pump this will get you a inch or so room.. Then see were you are from there.. It's a whole bunch easier when you have most of the components like the motor,rad,steeringbox/column, firewall/body around to fit it in.. You should have enought room....

  7. Im Kinda Doin The Same As You Right Now ..as The Others Said ... Dont Worry About The Fire Wall.. I Took My Fire Wall Out Completely As Im Puttin The Motor In The Car .. I Bolted The Radiator In The Front And Measure From The Fan To The Radiator ,.. ( 1 1/2" Clearance Max .. Non Flex Fan Of Course...:) .. From There Level Everything According ....id Say Thats The Best Start ....or At Least How Ive Started .. .
