  5. I saw Gene Mooneyham last week at Stox resturant in Downey. Still building blowers.

And something else to tickle your fancy…

Slickmick, Is this your way of telling us that Gene is your father? Just thought I'd ask as the picture looks like more than one of just a fan getting a shot with her favorite racer.

This car has haunted me all of my life,I saw it run when I was a little fellow,at greenvally or tulsa,I can't remember,it ran in the altered class,my dad ran a slingshot then.I remember my dad sitting me up on the fence & telling me that it was the baddest car around, right up there with SWC,It hauled ass that day.It blew away altered roadsters!!!My dad did not forget that race he saved an old coupe to build the likes of that car,it now belongs to me,Guess I need to get busy as I have not forgoten it either.

Nope, My Dad was Al Sharp..............He passed away last Fall.
The coupe was an incredible car to see and hear run. There has never been a car that sounded like that. Indescribable.

So what's the story behind the yellow version?

  17. Very cool. What's the story on the hood scoops? Like to know what info you have on the hoods too. 3-piece? Stock modified 4-piece. I'm building one and want some kinda scoop like in the yellow version. Wish I could get a better pic of the top hood on the yellow one. Anybody?( What motor did you run in it then?) Looks unblown at the time. Thanks

The Hood scoop was the original one that mooneyham and sharp had we sold the car toK & G Speed Assoc. Doesn't look like much of a scoop. My brother and dad along with preston Bailey ran the car my bother drove. If I remember correctly it was the stock three pict hood. If you really want details my brothers email is
    sprint67@citlink.net
    or
    Racer67@citlink.net
I didn't get to drive for about four more years after we sold 554.

  21. Just got back to this post for some reason. I will contact your brother about the car. The hood thing kinda throws me. Stock hood is 4- piece. The scoop on the yellow version looks molded in to the top hood to me. That would make it a 3-piece .Was this car always blown when you guys had it or in the K&G version? Side panels would have detached separately. I'm not gonna run a blower on mine but still wanna get that look. Thanks for the input.

  24. Such a beautiful race car, yet hardly a decent pic available anywhere on the net. :(

Any more pics would be greatly appreciated.

  27. Cool thread, and one of my all time favorite hot rods.

Do you have any info on your dad and Craig Breedlove's partnership ? I'd love to have me one of those Spirit hemi intakes :)

  28. I have a fond memory of the 554 car at Tulsa in 1985 at the Nostalgia Nationals that my dad and I attended and saw all kinds of big names there. I was 14 years old and got to drive my old man's Henry-J for the first time. The Mooneyham & Sharp car was one of the headlines and as a 14 year old boy I had never saw a car smoke the tires all the way through the Quarter mile before. I had been to many drag races prior to that and seen many big names of the times( Don the snake, Shirley,--ect) but this was a special moment to me and my dad to introduce me to the dragracing that he grew up following and running in (setting the world record in C/A AHRA 1/8 mile in 1965) and for me to see the difference between then and the now in 1985 was amazing!!! I have a few pictures of this car and many others in my many boxes of (so my wife calls them) JUNK and will soon seperate them out and make a few post's in the future but this post makes me think back to the day I ripped the tranny out of my old mans car on a two week trip and only got a " it's a race car and they are made to be tore up and made faster" thats why I was not upset when I tore the rearend out of his car at his FUNERAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

TEAR THEM UP AN MAKE THEM FASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Liked your story about your dad's funeral . . . he's of liked that! I'm building a 34 5-window, with a blown 392. I'm not going to set the engine way back, as it's going to be a street car. It will have a similar look to M&S car . . . 60's style. Take er' easy.
