hello hambERS How do you hook up a standard gm altenator and a 12 volt voltage regulator. I'm running into some charging issues. any info would be greatly appreciated. Aaron
i think you are asking for a wiring diagram for an EXTERNAL regulated alternator.... if you need it for an INTERNAL regulated alternator , let me know BAT terminal to the battery , F terminal to F on the regulator , R terminal to #2 on the regulator .....3 and 4 on the regulator can just be joined together and wired to 12 volt switched power the alternator and the regulator both need to be grounded to work properly
I know I'm an idiot and sell my projects before they need wiring. The **** scares me to death, can't be explained to me and the rules always change, now you've printed a diagram with an unknown item. What is a Delcotron?
that shows the GM external regulated alternator used from about 1964 to 1972..i didn't know someone called them a delcotron....i have wired them before , but it has been a long time trust me when i say wirng is not that hard , if i can do it..ANYBODY can do it..but someone is always asking me to wire their car here is internal regulated:
Thanks 36-3 window I know this has been covered about 40 times a day on this site!! do you think ditching the VR and old alt for a GM 1 wire is the way to go! Aaron
I think using an internal regulator, 3 wire 10-SI alternator is the way to go. http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tech/GmAlternatorIdentification.htm
On your internal regulated alternators, don't forget the diode in the exciter lead or it will keep running after you turn the key off. Stripes on the end of the diode towards the alternator. .39 cents at radio shack.
I've only needed to use the diode on one of them, with MSD ignition that has a high input resistance. With points or HEI there's usually no need for the diode.
Finished up the wiring..............this old truck is bad***. charging perfectly every switch works as it should...thanks hambERS....I'll post some pics if the finished harness in my COE!! Aaron
