I'm just curious what everyone is running behind their y-block engine. I'll be pulling the 223 out of my '54 soon and putting in a 272 and have come across a '55 Ford-o-matic, torque converter, bellhousing, and the rest of the components. Would this be an upgrade from my three speed or should I keep searching for a 3-speed bellhousing for the 272? Seems that the car bellhousing for a standard are hard to find and this automatic is close and cheap. Would I need a different flywheel? If I go with automatic, use a C-4? Also, is it correct to say the 223 bellhousing won't work on my 272? thanks.
The 223 bellhousing is too small for that y block. You can run a c/4 or aod behind it, but those adapter kits are expensive.
Thanks for the replies. I'll be going to look at the '55 drivetrain tommorrow, an automatic would be nice.
I agree about the automatic. I just decided to swap the y block out for a 302/c4. I have a three speed bell housing for a y block. If you want more details on it, send me a pm.
In my 54 (312) I have a top loader 4 speed. In my 56 Bird (mostly stock), I have a C4 Like both. The easiest would be the 55 Fordo.
I'm running a t-5, and its probably the best thing i've done to the car, besides the 292, in terms of drive-ability. The ford-o would be an easy swap, but I couldn't stand mine.
I'm a shifty sort of guy. If you have to spend money and buy a transmission, don't settle for one without an overdrive. My 55 sedan has a modified engine. I was told by the pro's to step up to a T 3550 because the guys in Mustangs are shredding second out of T5's. Expensive, yes. Money well spent in my opinion.
well Ole Don, that is good to know that you are a "shifty" sort of guy.. I will be careful dealing with you from now on !! lol
1960 green dot Cruise O Matic behind the 312. With a '61 aluminum bellhousing. Should have held out for a '61 Cruise O as I could have gotten rid of all the Mickey Mouse throttle control linkage.
In the '55 Ranchwagon , 272 y-block and top loader out of late '60's Mustang . It the '53 F100 , 368 Y-block and 4 speed stick out of late '60s Zodiac ( Produced by Ford in England and NewZealand ) . .
Currently I've got a T86 OD behind a 272 in my 57 but have a fresh 312/T10 combo I hope to get swapped in the next few weeks.
Well I looked at the auto and it needed a rebuild so decided to save my cash and stick with the 3 speed. The good news is that Hoosier Hurricane came through for me on the bellhousing so transplant will be starting today, hopefully.
Well things got busy on the farm so install started last night. Seems that the clutch release bracket won't mount up, bellhousing covers the mounting holes. Is this a common problem? Can I just notch the bell and "engineer" it to work? Just a reminder, the car is a '54 Ford.
You will need a '55-'56 Z-bar too, offset is different.See if Hoosier has the rest of the brackets and linkage,if not dragonknucks said there is a yard close by to him with several 55-56 Fords.Or this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/1953-1954-Ford-Mainline-sedan-car-manual-transmission-bell-housing-AB-6394-C-/290941975803?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1954|Make%3AFord&hash=item43bd7e3cfb&vxp=mtr
I think my Z bar bracket bolts to the front of the block with very short bolts. The bell housing does cover the bolt holes in the rear.
Thanks Don. Hoosier told me the same. I guess this Sat. night I'll slip it in. I bought a leveler from Speedway and WOW! is that thing nice. Should take the work out of it.
