   Am I kidding myself? I'd hate to go to all the trouble of installing one only to find that I won't have enough vacuum to keep it working.

   Just add a vacuum can, You can buy them from Summit or Jegs. If you want something more vintage looking I think Ford actually used them in the 70's and 80's.
