just picked up a 58 wagon but the rear is stock but is not a 9 inch and has a bbf fe block thought it was a 331 but what I have found in 58 the 331 is a 2v and this has a 4v and all I found is in 58 361 had 4v and inspection plate and the only car in 58 that I found was the edsel. is it posable that back in 58 at the ford plant some one screwed up and sent a edsel ch***y down the ford line please help
Not probable. After all these years, the engine could be anything from a 331 to a 427. Who knows what has been swapped in.
The 58 352 was available with 4 barrel manifold, the diff should be 9". Someone could have easily swapped manifolds. You won't know what the engine is til you pull the heads unless you can determine size by casting no's.
both are possable ben sitting for 30 years and there is no evidence of change everything is stock the motor is not the prob it would be cool if it was a special build I've got a 428 going in it i'm more conserned is the rear end sence its not a nine will it be strong enough
Ford built anything on the order sheet and a lot more that wasn't on that sheet. On a wagon, it could have a HD rear axle. Dana? The engine starting in 58 could be a Y block, a 332, 352, or other. If it was ordered for police duty, it could have an MEL engine.
I'm pretty sure station wagon & Couriers had a Dana. I had a 56 wagon years ago & the seals I got were for a Dana. My 54 truck has the same unit. Dana 40 or 44
If the rear has a removable back plate, it probably is a Dana. Since the 9 inch was so rugged, It's news to me that something else was used - but who knows??
From my understanding, once the nine inch came into production no Danas were used except for dual axle F trucks.
