Hello, I'm starting this new thread because I have some questions about asbestos. I knew there was asbestos in the old brakes of our cars, but I didn't know there were also in the insulation. In my old Ford Customline 1954, I removed the firewall insulation and headliner insulation without knowing that it was dangerous, parts were torn, I don't know if I was protected (mask). I'm afraid of taking risks. I can't sleep at night. I'm trying to restore my wife's Ford CUSTOMLINE 1954 and I will not make the same risks. How can I remove the insulation from the fire wall? I don't know where asbestos? It's in the "gl*** wool" (yellow material)? Or in the dark material behind? If it's in the dark material I think that I can keep the gl*** wool in place but if it's in the "gl*** wool" I'm afraid to keep it in place because it can make dust when I run open window ? I heard there were also in the body-joints, in the paint, electrical... Thanks in advance, Rémi from France.
Welcome back! been a long time since we heard from you, nice to hear you still are a Ford guy.I will forward this to a senior member of 1954ford.com for an answer.
Hello Jeff, Yes sorry for the absence, I have not posted for a long time but then I'm always a Ford guy I've sold my ford to finish the ford 54 of my Girlfriend. It's on the way.
Jeff sent me a PM and ask if I have any knowledge of the use of asbestos in '54 Fords. The only reported use of Asbestos under the Ford Motor Company banner was,,Brake Linings (1909-????) (1980, 1st warning) and Clutch Linings (1909-????) (1980, 1st warning),,basically the only do***ented use of asbestos. The material used on the firewalls was a fibered cardboard that was impregnated with oil from my reference books. Hope this eases your mind,,,I would suggest using a dust mask and gloves when removing the material. HRP
