Why would you want to reinvent the egg. Goodell Fabrications of 14195 Oklahoma 51, Coweta, OK Phone 918-486-6498 already make exactly what you want. Their crossmember is equal to or better than the original. It even comes with the front engine stay. The price used to be just over $200. I would give the a ring before I tried making my own.
I have fitted a couple of them and can vouch for their quality and fit.
Carpenters from memory charge $400 and you have to salvage your engine stay bracket.
    Just my two cents worth.

Goodell's. Bought one this spring, service was fast, shipping was reasonable (all the way to AK) and quality is first rate. Only thing it needed was a couple of weep holes drilled into the bottom.

One of the eastern states motto for weather is, beautiful one day, glorious the next.
We are coming up to the best time of the year in OZ. Spring in the West is all of the above. The link that 55Brodie has listed is for one of Goodell's crossmembers from them direct. It certainly is very possible to fabricate your own, but by the time you cut the old one out I can ***ure you that all you want is to stick a new one in.
If you make your own you need to make sure of your spacing for the lower control arm mounting.
    Good Luck.

I replaced mine in 2011 and bought a Goodells off evelbay . $329 shipped back then .
Mine was a cake walk and fit like a glove ! Couldn't have asked for a better part that fit perfect from anyone .
    Very happy Customer here !
