I'm having problems fitting my engine. It looks to be a bit ****eyed in the bay and the transmission won't line up. My mounts are both facing the same way. My question is this. Do the motor mounts install the same way or does one mount install in one direction and the other in the opposite direction? Thanks for your help. Bruce
I generally don't like to contradict what other members write but the openings in the mounts should point to the rear. Here is the drawing from the Ford Parts Manual.

Thanks guys. So let's review. On my '55 wagon 272, the opening on both mounts should be facing toward the rear of the car. That's what I have, but the engine sits ****eyed and is out about 1/2 inch off on one side. Guess I'll have to fiddle some more to get it to fit. UPDATE: Engine was hung up on the transmission linkage. All is well...and let's remember... "The clowns at the circus, they're real funny, but on the highway they're murder!" -Dan Matthews Bruce
Are you using new mounts? Used mounts if they have been installed incorrectly in the past could become distorted and cause the engine to look ****eyed. If you are using the full standard 55 mounts I think it is a good idea to fit the front steady mount also. If you were to stop in a hurry it could be be possible for the engine to come forward and go through the radiator, especially if one side is perished or split.
Thanks Rick. I'm using all new mounts, including the front. Now I'm h***ling with the starter and getting it back in and it's proving to be a real bear!
