What is everyone using for a one wire alternator? Looking to put one on my 302 but not sure which one to go with or which bracket will be needed.

If you PM madscience he just put a GM 1-wire on his Ford 200 this weekend. It just required a bit of grinding on the stock alternator bracket and some stacked washers as a spacer. So far, so good.

I used to use Powermaster units but it seems like over the years their quality of parts seems to be slowly diminishing. I had to replace one recently and they have a great service where they will repair any of their units for the price of parts only but it doesn't help you when you are on the side of the road. I have Powermaster units on 4 different cars.

A popular swap is the Ford 3g alternator and that is what I am going to try next.

Here is a some good reading.

Here you go from page 4 of that thread.

    130G Alternators:
    94-96 Mustang 3.8 V-6
    94-95 Mustang 5.0
    94-96 Thunderbird 3.8 V-6 (non SC)
    95-96 Windstar 3.0 V-6 (most are 3.8's)
    93-96 E/F series Trucks/Vans 4.9 L6*
    96 Sable 3.0 V-6
    94-96 Cougar 3.8 V-6
and plentiful one of all... 90-95 Ford Taurus.

    And also it's twin

Ok here is the page I couldn't find for the last post. There is great tech here on all the different Ford alternators.

Read installing 3G and Alternator files.

I like the idea of the 3rd gen but not sure about wiring or getting the correct pulley.

Just use the pulley you have on the car now. They should be the same shaft OD.

    Here is a wiring diagram.

Just take the yellow wire and hook it to the battery terminal on the back of the alternator like the picture below. This leaves just one wire to go to a key source.

White performance had a polished one wire alternator for about 95.00, works and looks great. I used an 80 amp.

I will check that one out. The only reason I like the idea of the 3G alternator is for ease of replacement if on the road.

That is the one in the ebay link I posted above and it is a direct fit to the bracket listed with it,just take it out of the box bolt it up and run a 6 gauge cable from the alternator to the + terminal on the battery and it is a done deal.Several of us have used one wire GM alternators which are available in Chrome for around $60 but a little odds and ends from Ace Hardware are needed. You can see mine mounted up here:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=34689&pictureid=397296 using the 65-69 Mustang bracket and help from Ace.

Alternators are traditional, first production car equipped with them was 1960 Plymouth Valiant. Seems like lots of the OEMs didn't want to abandon their tried and true but antiquated technology for a long time.
