Thought I would post some pictures of this as I go. I have been working alot lately on spraying my trunk and firewall and floor with lizard skin. I am spraying sound control only in the trunk, and for the firewall/floorboard I am spraying their sound control and insulation products. I intend to follow this up with some fatmat before the interior goes in for extra deadening.

Starting out I cleaned out everything and due to some water that got in there during the paintjob and got under my floor stick on insulation, there was some surface rust in areas. I cleaned it all real good and then applied some rust treatment product and cleaned again, then hit it with some primer.

The black patches you see are where there were some old screw holes and a few tiny pinholes. I read about and used a product by POR 15 called POR Patch. Stuff is awesome for this. Easily applies, dries rock hard, holes are no longer. The grayish material you see if spots is where I used seam sealer.

I then scuffed up the floor a little bit with some sandpaper just to ensure I got good adhesion of the lizard skin. A good tip I read somewhere, I used aluminum foil to cover many things as you can see. Its cheap and very easy to cover wires, gear shift etc...

I didnt want the spend the $$ on their applicator gun, so after reading some reviews from others I bought a $20 undercoating gun from TCP Global to spray it with. It seems to be working good enough, although not having used any other gun with it, I cant say if its as good or not. But its working fine for me so far.

I sprayed the trunk area a couple of weeks ago. 2 coats 2 days apart. After spending several days (few hours at a time) taping and covering everything off, I sprayed the firewall and floorboard last night. The pics below are of the trunk fully cured, and the firewall and floorboard still wet right after spraying the first coat. Hope to spray the second coat of sound control tonight, then follow it up with the insulation spray in a day or 2.

If I had any tips to share so far it would be GOOD LIGHT. I just cant seem to have enough of it. Having all the windows covered up its dark which makes it difficult to see how well you have covered the areas. Once it dries I will be able to see light spots and will hit them good on the next coat. Next (and most obvious) tip would be to do this BEFORE you have your car painted, new wiring harness in place, and all new gl*** installed! :) I have way to many afterthoughts like this which lead to more work because you have to be much more careful.

Will post updates as things unravel.

That looks awesome, I can't wait to be at the point on my build for this treatment. Thanks for explaining a few things and posting the pictures.

Once you are done using the lizard skin can you let this board know how much you used and the price, if you don't mind.

Yea I read all about the homemade skin a while ago. I think it may be OK, but dont know and decided to spend the extra this time. For every review I could find on someone say it worked just as good, I could find another saying it didnt. Much debate about whether the real lizard skin is just latex paint with balloons. From using it, I think there is more in there than just that. On the bad for your lungs, definitely a good idea to where a facemask (which I havent been and will start), and this is listed on their website

As to how much I am using, here is that. I only bought/used 2 gallons of the sound control formula. Whether its the exact mil thickness they recommend, I dont know, but that did allow me 2 good coats from front to back including the trunk. Their container for sound control states "One 2-gallon container of LizardSkin Sound Control will cover 40-45 ft2 at 0.040” (40 mils/1mm) thickness dry." So in the end I may not be at quite 40 mils everywhere, but I do intend on topping it with fatmat before my carpet goes in anyway, so I wasnt overly concerned with it being dead on.

I have 1 gallon of the insulation material since I am only spraying the firewall and floorboard, and I am pretty sure it should allow me to get 2 good coats. The insulation states it should cover 25-50 sq ft at the proper mil thickness, and I dont think I will be spraying more than 50 sq ft just doing the floorboard and firewall.

1 gal insulation for $68.79 shipped
2 gal sound control from Jegs $132 shipped

it cost a little more than just doing fatmat everywhere, but my thought on it was having this membrane over it I hope to not have to worry about water or anything else getting in there and doing damage. As long as my floor stays in tact I shouldnt ever have to worry about any sanding or painting on it again.

Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

Looks good, man. I did something similar on my '54 a few years ago, using Second Skin products (damper mat + liquid sound/heat deadener). I didn't spray because of all the reasons you mentioned, but using a paintbrush (3 coats) took forever. I guess there's no great way to do it unless the car is bare. Anyway, it makes such a huge difference in driving enjoyment. You'll be amazed.

    A few pics of mine:

Second Skin Damplifier Pro. But that was back when the original owner of the company was still around and gave discounts to members of their forum. I tried to get some mat for my dad the other day and there's a new owner - no more discounts. But the mat is top quality, stuck on great and does what it's supposed to do. I probably added 40lbs to the car's weight but I shaved off something like 7-8 dB. I can't remember exactly but I wrote it down somewhere. I actually bought a dB meter at Radio Shack just so I could do a before-and-after.

I'm not a shill or anything. I just did a ton of research before I dropped a bunch of money on sound deadener. This stuff was slightly cheaper and by all accounts better than Dynamat Extreme. I am happy with the Damplifier and it was easy to install. It also doesn't smell bad like some other mats. My 2 cents.

Well I attempted to spray a coat of the insulation on this weekend. It did not go as well as hoped. It is really thick, like cake batter. Will post of pic tonight I forgot to bring them in. It mixed well and went into the spray gun cup ok, but when spraying it all it wanted to do was splatter and constantly drip out of of the tip. The lizard gun has an adjustable spray tip, my undercoat gun does not, they may be the difference here.

I adjusted pressure from 40-90 and it did that no matter what. I dont have the "approved" gun so it is probably a result of that. I ended up"splattering" over everything and then backrolling and brushing it to smooth it out. I have about half of the gallon left to do one more coat and I honestly think I am going to use a brush and roller and forget the gun for the last round, it just didnt work very well. I didnt want to do it that way as L/S says they highly recommend spraying because if brushing or rolling the insulating properties may stick to the applicator when applying, but I think it will work better for what I have to work with. Anyway, plan to use up what I have left this afternoon and call that project done.

I believe you would want 2 gallons of this to do the firewall and entire floorboard area to the correct thickness. I am sticking with one since its all I have and I am adding fatmat over top of it.
