Anybody using a tilt/telescoping column in their COE? If so, how do you like it? What model donor? Input please.....
Not exactly what you were asking but the older John Deere tractors had a tilt and telescope column in them that had a tremendous amount of adjustability. I have always thought it would be cool to put one in a street going vehicle. The tilt was at the dash vs at the wheel. They made it so you could lift the whole thing out of the way and get out the door. The telescope would adjust app 6-8 inches. Models I drove with them in it were 4630, 8630 and others. One thing I really like is that it is just a nice clean tube app 2.5" dia, no 1980'd bs attached to it.
I used the one out of the 2003 gmc w4500 donor. I like it. It offers many differnt positions so who ever is driving can make it comfortable.
I think I will need some sort of a movable column, so I can get my stiff old carc*** in and out of the cab. In my case I think the wheel will need to tilt sideways toward the center of the cab, rather than ahead towards the dash. I will have to look at John Deeres! Thanks for that tip, mcgyver. In my present rod, I used the tilt column out of a 93 Ford Ranger, and it ****s! Only the wheel tips not the whole column so you get a "camber change" not a "raise and lower" of the wheel. (plus no telescoping)
Didn't some Thunderbirds have a swing-away wheel actuated by the drivers door? I don't think I want to pay for Thunderbird parts though! My wifes Honda has a nice tilt wheel set-up, but I want a simple tube column so I can mount the old style add-on turn signal switch. (wife would be pissed if the steering column disappeared out of her car also)
I looked at a couple at the wrecking yard today.....both GM. The tilt feature is OK but they only telescope a couple inches, so not much gained there? Plus they are **** ugly and have column shifters. I have even thought about building my own tilt column that swings at the dash....but I'm sure that would take a huge amount of time to engineer.
You could be swingin' with this kit https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/15956/Swing_Away_Bracket_Swivel_Mount_Kit_2.html
Can't use that! That much billet would make the fake patina curl up and fall off. LOL I've seen that at some show and it is in the back of my mind, but it doesn't help with the telescoping part of the problem that RMR&C asked about.
Heck Barry, I could build something like that.....that's a pretty good idea! I actually think that might work better than a tilt if I got the column angle right......
I'm using the stock '99 Vette column which has tilt and telescope, but telescope is maybe 6". As for comfort driving... I won't know that for a while yet.
RMR&C, IIRC, they used small cam followers to follow the slot and a spring loaded pin to lock it at either end of its travel. http://www.mcmaster.com/#cam-followers/=pdmyv3 http://www.mcmaster.com/#retractable-pins/=pdmzun
Hey Scott, I was reading one of Al's CDT posts and this may be an option for you as well. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=398201 I am sure they are laying all over the place in Big Sky Country Sorry about the pic size, my copy and paste is not working so well
I just remembered that my buddy had a late model GTO, he said it had the tilt at the dash and he did not like it in that car, but it may be worth checking out. Doubt they had column shift, but may have other extras to deal with.
