To clarify, steering when done in a ch***is swap. Stick steering is not a problem. [EDIT] STOCK steering... stupid auto correct... or user.

Since I'm working with an AD cab also I wanna see pictures too. The ropes and sticks would be interesting but I hope to take a different route...

Yeah, I'm afraid I'd still need a power steering pump if using ropes and a stick!

  6. Power steering for ropes and sticks would be a block and tackle wouldn't it?

Open mouth, insert keyboard! Although this time I can blame my auto correct, last time was TOTALLY my fault. Hell, even I laughed at me!

Just thought I'd throw this out there... my project parts collection is growing!

The crew cab will be parted out until I get down to the rolling ch***is. The engine was pulled for a rebuild that never got done, otherwise the truck is 100% complete including a recent interior re-do.

This will be a ramp truck. I do have a few other projects to get out of the way first. I have a handful of preliminary drawings done to get proportions and design ideas and have pretty much decided on the final product.

Most likely a ***mins behind the cab with an automatic will power it. I'll probably throw it together in primer first and drive it just to get it on the road, then come back and paint and detail it.

The photo on the right is the ONLY rot I can find anywhere on the super straight cab! It's the driver's side rear cab corner and is no big deal at all! I'm stoked, but have to get my wife's T roadster wrapped up and my shoebox on the road before I begin!

Although those should be done I'm sure I'll be cruisin' all summer and won't start on the COE until next fall. Wish me luck!

Also, a fellow COE owner was kind enough to share pics of his super simple solution to steering with his '38 Ford COE. Although the positioning of the Chevy's steering will be somewhat different, this worked well for him and may for me as well. This is a stock Chevy ch***is and steering box similar to the one above. Just a simple U-joint to the steering shaft and he's done!

Perfect location for a steering U-joint, makes tipping the cab pretty easy :)

Sure does man! I think that's going to be a little work more than I want to do though, and unnecessary for my planned build with the engine behind the cab. Time will tell though, plans will change until the build begins, then I don't make any more changes. Been there, done that, spent way too much money because of "new ideas".

Got a phone call during Thanksgiving dinner a short while ago. A guy in Vegas saw a Craigslist ad I placed looking for a ch***is. He explained it, and it's just what I need. I asked "How much?" He replied, "Just come and get it, I'd rather you have it than it go to the s****per."

Heading to Vegas Friday morning! I'll honk at the family for you Barry. :)

So the ch***is I picked up is in good shape but missing a few parts, namely the steering box and pitman arm. The ch***is is 1976 Chevy 1 ton dually. Anyone know what other vehicles I can find this box on? I think the 1 ton is different than the 1/2 ton, but I'm not sure. Maybe a van box with a pickup pitman arm would be better? Thoughts?

I grabbed a set of directional 16" aluminum wheels for $100 last week, and a pair of Bell Tech drop spindles for $60 today. I may have to start building this thing soon as I'm going to run out of parts space!

I have a truck box and pitman if you want to pay shipping you can have it. The pickup/1 ton boxes are all the same. Or you might want to look at the late 70's van box like I used on mine.....it raises up the input shaft like 6 inches. The mid 80's van boxes mount vertical, but use a different tie rod/idler arm setup.

Also, the mid 90's chevy pickups have the steering box mounted INSIDE the frame rail, which might work if you have the room and can figure out a linkage setup....just throwing that out there

Daddio, you might want to look into the P-van style of box from the same era.

That's what I'm thinking too. Not sure what combination of steering box and pitman arm will work though.
