I want to test the motor on a 6 volt battery. The 4 leads are red, black, white and green. Black to pos (+) Red to neg (-) White to ? Green to ?
Sounds like you are testing a power window motor. The green and black leads are the armature leads and the red and white are the field wires. Connect the green to +ve and black to -ve. When you connect either the red or white to the battery +ve the motor should reverse direction.

As I mentioned before, the green and black wires are for the armature (brushes) and the other two wires are the field windings. Reverse is achieved by putting 6volts +ve to either one wire or the other. Here is the diagram from the manual.
Rick: I will agree with you 100% as long as the motor is in the car and hooked up to the relay, power and switch. What I am doing is a bench test outside the car with just the motor and a 6 volt battery with no relay or switch. There is an additional step when benchtesting the motor: Connect the yellow and red leads together and the green lead to the neg battery terminal and the black wire to the pos terminal. The motor should run in one direction. Swapping the yellow and red wires. Will reverse the motor.
Ok. Forgot you're probably running it as +ve earth but surely if you join both the red and yellow leads together, it will not reverse, if it runs. The reverse is achieved by reversing the polarity of the field windings. The red and yellow field wires are switched independently on and off and have a common ground point. The original wiring does not turn both windings on at once and this would be the way that reverse is achieved. You don't need to worry about the relay as that is merely providing power to the armature through the brushes. Later model electric windows do it by reversing the motor through a double pole, double throw switch with centre off. A much simpler method.
You don't happen to have source for REDMOND parts catalogs? The were the mfg for most the electric motors for the auto industry from the 40's until 72', when they went out of business. I am trying to get the part numbers for the motors for my 53' Merc convertible, not the Ford/Mercury numbers but the REDMOND numbers. I have them for the window motors and the seat motor but not the heaer fan and the power top motor.
One final update. The motor is back together, and runs but slowly. Even with all the cleaning, the dis***embly and the re***embly, the new parts (brush holders (they are NOS and are made from 60 year old plastic), there is still an issue. One last thought, what if I turn the back cover 180 degrees....well as it turns out that is what I probably should have done first. It appears that the back cover was slightly off center in one direction and merely turning it 180 degrees made all the difference in the world. Why is it always the last thing you try that works?
