Wondering what Style of Paint I should paint my Custom? Original Car was a Straight Color Dark Blue. Some people think I should do the Car in Metallic or a Pearl Paint. I am still thinking I should keep it mostly Old School, But I have updated my wheels for now. Unable to find a Nice set of Dodge Royal Lancer hub caps. Any Ideas on the Color? Jim

Jim I have done several cars, mostly restomod. I always try to find a modern color close to a factory OEM color for that year. If you are going full custom, put anything you want on it. Make it yours.
Paint costs 150 bucks a gallon. Color is free. While sitting at a stop light, look around you. There is no limit.
Spend some time at socalcarculture.com and if you don't find a color or combination there you like you're in trouble. It is a bit like asking us what lipstick we'd want your girlfriend to wear, we'd like it but you'd be living with it. So it goes back to koolmercuryman ''Make it yours.''
Ole don the last time you bought paint must have been in 1960. I paid $697. a gallon and I needed 2 gallons. Price might be what determines the color you choose.
I have priced paints and things have changed. Both PPG and Dupont are very expensive and others like Kirker and Nason paints are less expensive. I am not having problems with the cost. Only choosing the Style of finish. The Pearl could be a fad and the Metallic could be to flashy.
Old don When was the last time you bought good quality paint? When I painted my 67 GTO the color was 392.00 a qt.PPG, DBC (Lexus code E L O) It took two gals of paint(3136.00) plus two gals of PPG 4000 clear (728.00)to paint car inside and out not including any primers or sealers. I just finished painting my 69 Roadrunner to the tune of 3528.00 and change for paint, clear also PPG DBC and 4020 clear . That was at my discounted price because I work as a body tech (over 40yrs)and ordered all materials at shop price. I don't know what PPG or Dupont cost in your area, but here in CA it is expensive. PPG clear is over 620.00 a gal for water base clear now. Obviously one can opt to use cheaper and less quality paints such as Omni, Vasper, Matix, Nason, or others along that line, but would probably be repainting them a lot sooner. Just my .02 cents on the subject.
You are right Riskybiz, I have not bought paint for a long time. I have read that your paint costs twice what mine does because of your state. My point was, any color in the rainbow can be put on your car, so make it yours. I hate bodywork. The last time I bought paint, Pitch Black enamel for a ch***is was 35 bucks.
IMO ( PPG ) is the way to go in line of material, you will be a lot happier with the results. As far as color choice or style, that would be personal preference. I like metalics, as you have a choice of co**** or fine metalic sizes. I would recommend going to your local paint dealer and find a color chart you like and pick from there. You can also look around you as you drive and if you see a color you like on the car next to you, remember the make, model and a close range of year. Take that information to a paint company and hopefully they will point you in the right direction. I hope you find what you are looking for and have fun painting.
Pearl paints were a fad when they were new. The great thing is that was the same time that candy paints were a fad and relatively new. Flip flop pearls are gauche and will go the way of the dodo eventually, but most pearls offer a brilliant shimmer that can add to any paint job. The downside of pearls and candies are that they age like milk on a summer day. But OEM three stage pearls like GM's Diamond Pearl looks unbelievable. Metallic paints look good. Essentially what I'm saying is, look around and find something you like, and you think will compliment your car.
I don't have a whole lot to add as far as to which manufacturer of paint to use but I am taking notes. I looked at the pictures of your car and can't tell if you are planning on adding the side trim back like you had it originally or if you are leaving it off this go round. Either way, I believe the car will look best in a solid color but perhaps with a twist. Paint the body in a solid color and the roof in the same color but with some metallic flakes added. Just my two cents. And not that this is my thread but if it was I would give Zapato the award for best reply. The lipstick comment is pure comedy genius.
The Trim will be the same Dos Cincos. Thanks for all the thoughts and Ideas on Color Styles. Just thought it would be a interesting subject. I am going to do my own thing anyway. To each his own! Jim
