I found a couple of threads that recommended the pertronix flame thrower distributor for the 302 but it seemed they were putting it in roller motors. Will this work with a non-roller or will a different dist be a better choice?

I would go with a Ford Duraspark, all factory Ford parts that can be bought at your local junkyard or parts store. If you break down on the road with the pertronics where are you going to buy parts.

I run the Duraspark in my car and I carry an extra ignition module in the trunk just in case of a break down, its usually the first part to go bad.

Yeah, but I used a Ford Blue Cap :D Actually it was part of the rewiring project,I wanted to reduce wiring clutter to a minimum and since the HEI only requires one 12 Volt source wire it fit the bill.Last Ford show I went to in Phoenix I bet close to half SBF's had them,no extra wires no external control boxes what's not to love?

I run petronics, the base model in all my cars. If the module blows just put the points in and go. I'm lazy thou, i carry a spare module.

I agree with JeffB. I've ran Petronix in vehicles with good results. I've also ran Mallory Unilite. But in my opinion, the cost of those Ford HEI's makes it a no brainer. You get all of the advantages of affordable, reliable, high energy spark with simple one wire installation. IMO more reliable than Dura Spark----I had more Ford modules fail on me than GM modules. The HEI is deffinately a cleaner install. I've completely stopped using Petronix or Mallory---if you have a failure with one of those, your DOA.

My luck with hei was not good. Went through two in a year (different brands) I've tried the pro comp but now the pertronix and it's never run better.

Something to keep in mind, the aftermarket HEI's use Chevy GM guts next time you hit a Pick-A-Part you might grab a Chevy HEI just as a back up with those AC Delco parts.

I grabbed that Skip White setup you recommended Jeff. Thanks for the info as always. We're going to get the motor/trans set in this weekend, I bought the kit from Butch's Cool Stuff for the mounts.

I wouldn't run a giant hei in any old car. Looks stupid in my opinion.

Jeff - Do you know if that Skip White distributor has a steel gear? I've looked all over and can't find that info anywhere.

edit - I actually found the info on the distributor only link (no plug wires included) http://www.skipwhiteperformance.com/detail.aspx?Item=6502-BL

This distributor cannot be used with roller cam motors so be careful with using this distributor unless there is a way to change to a steel gear.

To add to the mix, I run the ACCEL points conversion kit in all my distributors and have not had one failure. The parts are off the shelf at any Advance or Autozone so you are ok there. The same kit works for all 57-74 Ford V8 distributors that ran points.

Thanks for the info Dos, my motor isn't a roller so it should work out.
