I've been working hard this winter and it's almost ready for the road! Could someone tell me or show me how and where the front bumper end bolt go? The ends of the bumper just are floating and there is a hole in the bumper to hook to something. There must be a brace that I don't have. What does it look like and where on the body does it mount? Maybe I can make a pair. My junk yard seat fits perfect and looks right for the car. I wish I could figure out how to post a pix , but I can't! I don't see any : add or insert photo anywhere. I've done it before? Any way the seat is from and Pontiac aztec . It's the back seat ,which folds like it has to for a two door car and it's the right height and width! Looks great!
There should be brackets and extensions on the end of your gravel pan. The bumper attaches to those. I'll try to get a better pic tonight for you.
O.K. I see what the bumper bolts to , does that brace then bolt to the point where the fender and gravel pan meet? Thanks, Dan
Yes, the Brace bolts to the point where the Fender & the Gravel Pan meet. There will be 2 holes through the Flange for mounting the Brace.
Some better pics of the bracket. I couldn't drag the bumper out because it's buried behind some other stuff. The bumper is standing on end and this is the driver side.
great, thanks very much. I think I can make a pair of these. I thought it would go around the gravel pan and bolt to the frame? I never saw a bumper bolted to sheet metal!
I guess they figured the four bolts across the front would be enough to hold it on and these two "wing" bolts would be fine to stabilize it.
I think that's probably also why every splash pan you see in a junkyard has the corner torn off. Any impact on the bumper rips the bracket and usually the attached piece of the pan right off. When I get to the point where I reattach my bumper, I'm making my own brackets that go to the frame instead of the body. I'm also hoping that the engine vibrations I used to feel through the whole front end will go away - I didn't know the bumper was attached to the body until I tore the whole thing apart last year. Aren't the '55-up bumpers attached differently? I remember seeing different brackets at a junkyard one time. I thought maybe Ford got smart and ran the bumper brackets down to the frame instead of the body after '54...
As do the '57's. You see alot of fenders buckled slightly over the center of the wheel well as a result. LOL...One of the '57 Ford forum members had some paint/bodywork done, and his bodyman tried to tell him that must have been the way Ford made them, because he never saw a '57 fender that wasn't 'crowned' at that point. I had bought a set of spare fenders years ago, and the p***enger side had that buckle in it....unfortunatly, I didn't notice it when I bought them, or even know to look for it.
