The yoke flange already fits inside a snug recess in the output flange, so the only concern would be rotation. I did want a bit longer bolt, but they only had three of that size, and to get one long enough for the full shoulder would have over an inch of threads hanging out the nut. I may change that later, I'll have to see if I can find some with more shoulder than threads..... Like you said, the Y block not very torquey. Thanks for the input..
Not much to show but the truck did get some "new" shoes this weekend. I picked up some used RV tires for setup/fitment purpose. I plan on using 255/70R22.5's (eventually) but at about 400+ per tire new, these will fit the bill while finishing the project. Where these are 235/80's, the diameter is close enough to get all the suspensions set up.
neat project...... how can you tell that the outer frame isn't tempered? I have a p30 motorhome ch***is that I am considering & I know you shouldn't weld to tempered frames.... thanks
Thanks Henry! Slacker, on mine, it drills too easily, and it was installed in 1952... On the motorhome frame you're looking at, I would check with manufacturer's specs.
Hi Robert! Good to see you making some progress on the shop truck. I plan to get back on the 32 here really soon. So, maybe I'll be seeing you here a little more often. You too Henry! Missed you at Super Chevy Memphis this year. I had the 55 there this year. Had a great time.
Hey Jeff, it will be good to see some progress on the 32 (as well as my own project) Maybe we'll both get done about the same time. I had a metalshaping demo at the shop this weekend for some of the stovebolt guys... we broke out the bead roller and made an upper windshield panel for one of the guys in OH. http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=5974 .
Well between a couple trips to UK this year, and one to Cape Cod, progress has been slow in the shop. I did find time last week to measure the rear for new U-bolts, and the care package showed up today. 1" diameter, 5" x 14" inside dims.
Sorry for such a long hiatus from the projects in the shop, The day job has sent me to UK quite a bit this past year, and things are just now starting to settle down. So while I was in the shop changing oil in the wife's vehicle, I did find time to get a couple of the new u-bolts fitted up. Here's the new ones: The ones that came with the rear would have had an interference issue with the frame when dumping the rear bags... So here is the fix.... two changed, two to go.
I did get some more accomplished on the shop truck this evening. The bracket for the p***enger side was drilled for the compressed bolt pattern and then the old holes welded in. I learned from the last time, welds are tougher to drill, so weld afterward. Looks like I forgot pics of the final welded up version..... Then, back to the crossmember that bolts between these brackets, the original frame rails on the donor school bus was 11" high, where the factory rails are about 6.. This requires a slight mod to the crossmember, and explains the compressed bolt pattern.. Modifying the final end...here's the cut line.... Welded in........ All ready for install. Next on the list will be to measure out the location for drilling the p***enger frame rail..
Well, not exactly next. Tonight I went to my BIL's and borrowed his plasma cutter to put the new holes in the mounting flanges of the crossmember. After all that welding, drill bits do not play nicely. Holes added.... Used a washer with a 1-1/4 hole, which worked just about right as a template for the plasma torch to provide a 3/4 clearance hole.... And now some progress you can actually see, the crossmember installed. Still need to lay out and drill the other p***enger side. And now, just to show some eye candy, here's a truck that a high school buddy is restoring, it was his father's as we were coming up, and he inherited the truck a few years back when his father p***ed. He and his brothers have been working the past couple years to get it back together, and this weekend marked the start of its shake-down season...
Doesn't look like much progress on the shop truck, but I finally got the other frame rail drilled.... Next on the list, to install the air tanks and run the lines...
Man, that is cool! Your buddies 51 looks good too. What are you going to haul with it? Do you have something in mind or is it just for whatever comes up?
No, just the ones that came with the original bus rear clip. Anything from project vehicles to my tractor...
