I have a ford frame and I can't seem to identify the numbers it starts with a *40 and has six numbers total how do i tell what year and was it car or truck frame any help is definitely appreciated... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The chart I have for 1932-1953 Ford VIN's does not contain any numbers beginning with *40. A model 40 is 1933/4 Ford but that designation is not in the ch***is I.D. A photo would quickly allow an identification. Model - A's maybe different.
VanPelt Sales has a good chart for engine number range for each year Ford and Mercury from 32 to 53: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm Ford's intent was to have the engine number stamped on the frame in three places as per the drawing below. The full engine number was to be stamped on the forward location with just the numerical sequence (without the prefix) on the middle and rear stamping, but in all locations the stamping included a star at the beginning and end. Since the numbers were hand stamped on the frame after the engine was installed anomalies exist, including middle and rear stampings omitted and it seems like in at least one instance the prefix on the front stamping omitted. You got a star at both ends of the number and can you find all three stampings? ***uming you found one of Ford's stampings and are missing the prefix you probably have either a late 33 or mid 38 60-hp frame. As HRP states, frame pics would help.
The number visible under the hood had a prefix (such as "18") but the two numbers further back did not have a prefix. The beginning number for July 1933 was 361502 and the ending number for August was 459701. The numbers for the V8 60 for October 1937 were between 385924 and 422514. A picture would help. the frame has been highly modified I am posting a few pictures Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Hard to tell by the pics. I see no body or running board mounts. The x member looks 33-34. Original cross members are missing making it harder. A pic of a side rail would be a big help if not a number. Tim
