I picked up someone else's project and over all it seems to have a pretty good start. The sheet metal is clean and it came with brand new floorboards. What I would like to figure out is who made the custom boxed in ch***is the car came with. The car is a 1935 Ford Tudor sedan so the frame is going to be one that fits 1935-40 fords and the dimensions of the cross member appear to follow the original ch***is dimensions. The round tube steel is similar to the look of Pete and Jake's ch***is but is pretty easy to tell it's not the same... maybe it's an older style? The guy working on it lived in Ohio but it doesn't look like something a local shop would put together. Anyone please able to help me out? Sorry if the pics are a little confusing. The new ch***is is currently sitting on top of the original.
I heard from someone Jason at Pete and Jake's and he was able to tell me this is not a ch***is they have sold, and wasn't sure who's it might be. He was able to tell me the Front End picture I sent him that is resembles one from JW Garage. Looking at JW offerings the center section again is similar to the round tube section they sell, but still doesn't look to be a match. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Could it be a Downs Manufacturing frame? I bought a 35-40 Ford tubular x member from them, to fit in my Plymouth, and that x member in the pic, looks similar to the one under my car. The unequal length rear tubes, and the angled driveshaft hoop. At the least, if it isn't, it looks like a Downs x member to me.
It looks like you might have nailed this one Phantompjcoupe. I can't really find much information besides the company has changed names a bunch and went out of business a couple times. I might try to email Downs Industries to see if they still have any information hanging around about these ch***is. At least now it makes sense why I can't find anything that resembles this particular center section.
Blah! I have to eat my words. I now think it isn't a Downs x member, after all. Downs frames had a trans crossmember that unbolted, and dropped out from the bottom. Your frame doesn't have that. Maybe this is just someone's copy of their work. Sorry I wasn't as much help as I thought I'd be. Let us know what you find out about it!
I'm not sure where to even look at this point. Honestly I think in the end it won't end up mattering too much since it's a pretty standard 35-40 ch***is. Biggest way will be finding the best way to attach the body. I'll probably end up with Posies rear end suspension and just complete the mustang 2 front end with a nice disc brake kit. I'm not trying to build a show car so I just want it to drive nice.
