I don't know if anyone has asked this question. I am swapping out a 292 for a 283 and I am wondering if I can use the 292 flywheel on the 283.
I can't guarantee it but I think itle fit!...unless its externally balanced in wich case there will be additional iron cast in one location to make that spot heavier....
292 was a popular overbore for a 283 as well a displacement for a 6 cyl thus the confusion---if the flywheel and crank bolt patterns are the same and it is neutral balance it should work...
i had a 250" 6 back in the 70s, and v8 bellhousings, starters and flywheels worked. i think the smaller 6s--not the 292--will use sbc rods and pistons!
We happened across an extra flywheel laying in the corner of my friends garage and so the 292 gets to keep the flywheel it has. Thank you guys for helping me out. The truck didn't make it Santa Maria but it did fire up after working on it for 35 hours straight: no drugs, just beer, pizza and me getting a 10 minute nap and the other 2 guys got to sleep for an hour.
too late...but to answer the question, you can use an early 292 flywheel on a 283. The later ones (starting some time in the late 60s?) have 1/2" bolt holes and 3 dowel holes, and won't fit quite right. Good you got it going, sounds like fun!
Not true. All of the SBC's manufactured from 1987-on, with a one-piece rear main seal, are externally balanced.
