So a mate of mine has an old ford truck a 50 i think and it`s got a 350 sbc with a camaro front clip. I`m thinkg about buying it but the chebbi has to go. i have a spare 428 cj fe motor that would be cool. What are my options?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... do or do not? What are you looking for? Options as far as what? You stated you had a cj FE, and you stated you have a Chevy frame (potentially). Your options are; Do it, OR do NOT do it. I'd be afraid of the Ford 428 FE rejecting the inferior Chevy steel and bailing out of the works at the first turn of the key...

I think this might just be a case of hang it in and try. I know for a fact that because Ford insisted on putting it distributors and oil pumps on the wrong end of the engine, your biggest hurdle is going to be pan to front crossmember clearance. Not so sure of exhaust manifolds and upper A arms either. Your probably going to end up going back into the fire wall and trimming the crossmember. If it was anything Ford BUT an F.E. I'd be laughing my ass off right now!

Don't forget about the under-appreciated Ford FT...

Kudos for bringing that Ford back from the dark side.

4 wheel drive trucks have a rear sump pans and considering the distributor is on the right end of the engine, firewall mods should not be needed.
I will have access to a 4X4 pan is few days if you need some measurements.

Some of the F150's with a 360 had a rear sump pan. If you rob one in a junk yard, take the oil pump pickup and the special main bearing bolt the pickup hangs from as well.

derbydad is dead on. plate it. if you dont you better be a good fab man. lots of work. and i might be wrong but i think the frame rails are too close for easy install.

  10. the camaro subframe that I put under my 56 Dodge 1/2 ton works well...I'm using a 318LA series Mopar for power....now if I mounted the enging where the stock camaro engine was, the valve covers of the 318 would be sitting beneath the floorboards...now I don't think that your F1 us too different than the Dodge chassis....I had to mount my 318 several inches higher and forward to get the valve covers in front of the firewall...there is LOTS of room between the oil pan and the camaro crossmember...it just "looks right" now.....I wouldn't worry too much about the front sump clearing the subframe if the FE is mounted high enough....my 318 has a rear sump, but I could fit a front sump with no sweat and still have room....I currently own a 52 F1 and ran a 390FE for 22 years....I have the stock beam axle and with the 390 there was six inches between the axle and the oil pan....more than enough room...never hit the pan with the axle at all...that FE had plenty of "snot"....low 14s@100mph all day long !!!....I say buy it and give it a shot !!!...remove its "belly button engine" !!!

  11. Easiest option is to get a rear sump pan like from a truck or an after market unit.

  12. Slick has the right question but, you have not answered.

Is it front or rear steer?

Saying a 'camaro' subframe is very vague as there are significant differences.

The 67-9 style has rear steering.
The 70-81 style has front steering.

I would think the earlier style sub frame withrear steer would make it easier ( if that word could apply ) to fit the FE engine into.

Either way, hope it works out and looking forward to seeing it.

Broncos never came with a FE. I now have a rear sump FE pan sitting in my shop if some measurements are needed.
One minor issue is the dipstick on front sump FE's goes through the block and rear sump dipsticks go into the pan. A tap and plug make for an easy fix.

The truck FE front covers are often cast iron, making it easier to mount them to a motor plate.

  19. Steve your a real glutton for punishment! check the sump of the oil pan as i think that would be the main issue, if it has rear sump on the ford engine that would make it easy. easy stuff mate!:D

The subframe turns out to be a 72 Nova.
Any info on this would be appreciated

Since it already has a chevy subframe and mounts put a 454 chevy in it and have the added bonus of more power and torque. Or, change the frame back to an original p.u. frame, beef it and run the FE. Lippy

  25. well a 72 nova was rear steer and no reason a 428 wont fit the subframe unless their is a pan clearance issue. the mounts look like they will clear and since the dizzy is in front you don't have a firewall issue so that give you options where to place engine even if you offset it like lots of the mopar engines were from the factory.

Well I tried to fit the fe in the frame using a 4x4 rear sump pan but it would have to be back into the firewall to clear the drag link.
Is there any options on a dropped drag link?

That would have adverse and unacceptable effects on the steering geometry.
