In the beginning there was the shed find. Last driven and registered in 1962. 50k original miles. They got it running and I snatched it up.

Drove it to Cruise Nights last fall and this spring but the fuel system was having "issues". I replaced the gas tank with a new Re-pop one and added a new fuel pump and fuel filter after blowing out the fuel line. No more issues. Runs great now but gas guage still doesn't work. I'll mess with that later. On to step 2. The car now has a bullnose strip and no hood emblems. Rewired and replaced the headlights as the old wiring was toast and both lights had bb sized holes in the lenses. I can drive after dark now :)

8Nice and I hope you keep it O.G. In other words, no V8, T-5, front clip. In short, no B.S.

Been having fun doing cruise nights, local shows and just driving around. When the weather won't let me do that, I've been putzing around in the garage/shop. Here's a mockup of what I'm working on now. 49 grill with 53 vette teeth. I have asbestosis so I can't do as much as I could, but still working at things. Safety note. Take off your oxygen nose hose when using an angle grinder and move your portable to the far end of the shop. I managed to get a spark and set my mustache on fire like a dumb ass. Nothing like flames in front of your eyeball to get your attention. It's mostly healed now. As for the grill, it's easier to hide where the vette meets the grill when you use a 50 grill and those big uprights, but I'll figure something out. I like the 49 uprights better Never cared for the 50 uprights They don't match anything else on the car in my opinion. Also the park lights don't stick out of the grill like Dolly Parton's chest like the 50 ones do. Anyway it's been great fun cutting out everything that don't look like a 53 vette from the middle of that 49 grill.

I'm keeping the 216 and 3 on the tree till it gives up the ghost. I AM putting on dual carbs with an Offy manifold and a pair of Fenton headers. Going old skool on this one. I may paint it eventually but right now it's like we did things when I was a broke kid. 1 step at a time and scrounge what you can. Covered up that body work on the hood with a can of Hunter Green paint from Walmart. Maybe I'll do the whole car in spray can Hunter Green Suede. Could this be the new Hot Rod Black??? Oh. I did put a set of 56 Chebby mirrors on the doors so I can see to back up. Neck don't swivel like it used to. Only other addition so far is a set of glass blue dot tail light lenses. Pulling off the side spears because I splurged for a new set that wasn't sideswiped when the 1st old lady owner hit the garage opening and the garbage cans. That explains the reworked fender and the funky angled bumper too. LOL

As requested. Side view. As you can see from where I pulled the spear on the fender, This car was that funky blue/grey color new. It has NEVER been repainted. That paint sun faded to the green color. Patina in spades! :)

Car show at Taylor park last weekend to support the Shelly Boy Scout troop. My buddy Paul parked next to me. Look close, his patch panels have patch panels but they're done right and I wouldn't be afraid to hop in that thing and haul ass all the way to the East Coast. It's not a rat rod. It's an unpainted HotRod. There IS a difference! Grin.

That trunk handle and those uprights on the bumper are gonna go away soon.
Anybody got a Caddy solenoid just laying around you'd let go of cheap?

I love it! I'd drive it as is, but that may not be saying much, as I drive my avatar as is. Hmm?

Yanked the fender skirts while working on and adjusting the brakes so question for today is:
    With or without?

  17. At its current stance I say no skirts. Gonna drop it? Then skirts.

Good looking car, like the plan to just drive it as is and update as you see the need, keep it on the road. No skirts.

Was going to post updates this morning but engine pics are on my phone and the battery is dead. Charging the phone now. Anyway, Ted Carlson set up the dual carbs and Fenton dual headers and headpipes for me. He's a genius on these model B dual carb setups. Still need some Smittys and tailpipes but I've been driving to Cruise Nights. Right now that dual open exaust is a bit on the LOUD side. Had a cop pull up next to me at a red light on the way home from cruise night last week and I thought I'd get a ticket, but he just grinned and gave me a thumbs up! :) To paraphrase the Beach Boys song, She's real mean, my two-sixteen...! ROFL. Nothing like pulling into the parking lot and seeing EVERYONE turn and look. when you rap the throttle a couple times before you shut it dawn... Also I've converted the car to 12 volts. Real life keeps getting in the way, but it's comming along slowly.

That's one sweet Chevy!! I like your plan - keep it simple, and old school. When I go to a cruise or a show a car like yours grabs my attention every time, reminds me of my youth. I simply walk past the high-dollar rod-shop builds that remind me that money isn't always the answer to a cool ride.

Way back in the late 50's, my cousin had a '50 just like this one, he painted it mint green in the back yard and it looked great. It sat low in front and back, and it ran a 270 GMC with Howard cam, hot ignition, dual carbs and Fenton's. Many was the time we ran away from a '55 Chevy or an Olds.

(But I still love the old 216's, that's all I could afford in high school, and since most of my friends ran Ford flatheads, I was king of the heap in my small world).

Stay with it, and enjoy the ride!!!

Dash Duck following the Chevy home from Ted's place. Less junk on the trunk. Gonna use an old Caddy electric door popper to open the trunk after I get the holes welded up. Those ugly licence plate light horns will be replaced by a single half round light on the shelf below the plate. Dash Duck is wondering where Mr. Bones ran off to this time.

That's actually Son of Dash Duck in that last pic. The origional Dash Duck as some of you know was with me from Viet Nam to this spring riding on the dash of all my rods. All those years in the sun and on the road all over the west to races and events finally took their toll and forced him to retire this summer. He's retired now and spends his time indoors hanging out on my computer desk keeping my Norm Skull company. Anyway plans now are to finish the exhaust and get back to the body work. A few dings and scrapes here and there and a bunch of holes need welding up where I removed the emblems from the trunk and the trim from the rear fenders. I haven't welded anything since the late 60's. 2 friends that were going to help with that both just had lasic surgery so I guess I'll have to relearn how to use a wire feed or blue flame torch. Also looking to add dropped spindles to the front over the winter. I want to drop the car some but still be able to get in and out of driveways and over speed bumps. Hydraulics are WAY out of my budget.
