Gang, I just booked my flight to Indy in order to take in both the Vintage Racing Invitational event at the Speedway and the Goodguys show at the Indiana State Fairgrounds during the first weekend in June. Anyone else going? So... I'd also like to know if there are any other local area events (open houses, car shows, races, etc.) planned that weekend that might be open to the public. I'm pretty pumped about that weekend and even a little worried that there might simply too much to see and do. But I love a challenge! I mean, who ever heard of combining a Miller Meet, Vintage Racing Nationals, Vintage Drag racing and a big Rod & Custom car show all in the same town at the same time? Any inputs to share? Friday Night go to Bubba's on Main Street (Accross the street from the track). The world famous "SPAMARAMA" starting at 6PM. Good food ...Good music...
I'm running my chevy II midget Sat and Sunday at the speedway and will probably got to Bubba's on Friday.
Hey guy's, been hearing a bunch of negativity about moving to the Fairgrounds! Yes, it's in the hood, yes it ****s that it is "open", but, if any of ya can remember when the Car Craft Natl's were here it's a great venue. Great cruising lanes, a bunch of shade trees, gr***, and as always "Great People!" As for being "open", Oh Well! You stayin at home isn't going to change anything! We all are car guys. The only thing or person that is effected is you, your going to miss a great time. Make sure you attend the welcoming party a Ray Skillman's. He has an awesome museum and a great race team. If you haven't been to Bubba's on Main Street in Speedway your missing a super time. Bubba does this out of his love of Hot Rods and Hot Rodders, he's one of the best! I'm working gate 6 off Fall Creek Parkway on Sunday. See ya there and say HI! "Turbo's Don't ****"
We will have three cars in the oval track cl***es at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway meet. mac miller in INDY
Bill Akin and our crew will have 3 cars at this event also.....Looking forward to this new event...left his three cars in Indy following our annual deal during Indy 500 week.....Joe
So BZ ?? What is you ch***is setup plan for the speedway?.. tires, stagger, steering ratio, caster angle, etc. The main concern for the cagecars and midgets is stability on the long straights.
I set my car up from the beginning to be a stable cruiser. I have the same Ackerman and castor as my 32 ford which drives amazing at all speeds. The castor is 4 degrees and .125 toe in. Never had any bump steer or death wobble with this setup. Both axles are square with no lead. 1/2" tilt or wedge. Steering is slow short pitman arm. Stagger is 1". Rear gear I'm running is 4.11 total which will get me 3800 rpm at 65 mph with the 23" RR. I have a 3.48 and a 2.99 to switch to if that is still to high. I do not plan on trying to set any speed records. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Ray Skillman owns several car dealerships all over Indy. His main base is a huge building on the south side of Greenwood - south of Indy that's has a large number of muscle cars that are in perfect condition - that are also for sale. There are all sorts of old cars and old race cars too. Real cool place to see while your here.
Ok gang, I must admit I had a great time at Indy last weekend and as much as I tried just couldn't get all the events in. My sister was a great host / airport shuttle driver and I had a crew p*** and a turn 2 suite ticket for IMS to make it more fun. I only got to the GG show on Saturday AM and I didn't make the GG drags (Spam over-ride!) but did make all but one poker run stop and was happy the last stop was at Ray Skillman's collection - coolest cars there were the 4 cam Ford sprinter and the Kurtis sports car. Special treat on Saturday eve was seeing the Mel Kenyon midgets at the Speedrome (I hadn't been to that track since about 1962!). I think they run the same 1100 Yamahas the Legend cars use, but regardless of that they put on a good show. I did run into a few HAMBers, including lunch with the Rooman, and then a few circle trackers at IMS. Here are some pix... sorry about the quality, as I don't have a tele and the track was SO far away from the fences at the Speedway. Other times I just left the camera behind to better enjoy things. On the sports car side, DeKon Monza 004 was there (I was a gofer mech for the guys who built those cars) so it was cool to see one of them again. Coolest car? The 1931 Alfa GP car, I suppose. But all the vintage Indy cars were not far behind. And the AutoWorld 54 CanAM car was there, along with Mr. Oscar Koveleski, for the vintage model builders in our crowd. The best vintage "race" at IMS was a combined group of rear engine Indy cars and the SVRA's similarly powerful, FA, F5000 and even F-1 open wheel cars. At times the crowd of cars headed to turn one gave the wonderful impression that there was a real Indy race taking place. Some big egos out there! Later, Gary
And even more pix! There were two NE modifieds at the show. Ever see one on track at Indy before?!?!? Gary
Source for a lot more images far better than mine - and covering a wider range of cars. Gary http://www.sportscardigest.com/svra-indy-brickyard-invitational-2014-photo-gallery/10/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/svra-indy-brickyard-invitational-2014-report-photos/
Thanks for the pics Gary...and why are you still posting thumbnails? Ryan made it sooo easy to post them full size.
Larry, I like the idea of the saving space if you have a lot to post and the viewer you get to see them. On the other hand, I sure miss the old version where the thumbnails were much larger and you could more easily see the subject matter and then pick / choose what you wanted to see out of a larger group. Gary
Thanks for the pics! I skipped Goodguys this year and went to IMS on Saturday. The road course racing in the morning session of vintage sport car racing was great! They were running pretty hard. Some spin-outs, a few smoked enigines, and some side-by-side racing. The afternoon oval session of past Indy cars and sprints was more of a control speed parade, but it was still cool to see them on the track again. Parnelli Jones (I think he's 80 yrs old) drove his winning 63 car a few laps around the track. I really like how they had the garage area open and allowed you to walk around the cars for viewing. Most of the owners were there to talk and answer questions on their cars. A lot of them were letting kids to sit in the cars! One of my favorites was a black 1963 original fuel injected, slit window vette. Owner was 73 yrs old and said he has been racing the vette for over 30 years. Racing event dash plaques from the early 80's were on the glove box door. He said on Friday he brushed the rear drivers side quarter panel (fender flare) against the wall, just running the car hard... had a little white paint strip to remember IMS by! Saw that #5 1930 Ford roaster in the back of the garage area. That is a very neat car with a lot of old details... Anyone know who's car that is? I believe I saw that the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational has a 3 year contract with IMS. Anyone that is in town for the Indy Goodguys show, I recommend spending a day at the track.
ATTA BOY TERRY !!!!! BEST REPLY I HAVE SEEN REGARDING GOODGUYS!! WE SOLD TONS OF STUFF IN THE SWAP MEET AND ENJOYED THE AIR CONDITIONED PAINTED SWAP MEET AREA. BOUGHT MY SPACES FOR NEXT YEAR...
