I have an older GM steering column, 70's/80's era with the upper bearing area having these components using a pic off the web to show you. The small cup part with the small slots in it which sets on top of the upper bearing inner race...does that just set on the race and gets centered by the column shaft? I can't seem to push it into the race so I am thinking the big spring you compress just sort of holds pressure against the race when the lock plate it held down by the small metal ring.Hopefully some one is familiar with this setup. How does the upper bearing outer race get replaced? the bearing setup itself is sort of cheesy that the ball bearings can just all fall out. thanks

That is exactly how it works. the spring holds the upper race down. I have chased many bearings in these. Just use plenty of grease to hold the balls in place when you ***emble it.
