I see a lot of these new steering arms and pitman arms have a dual taper in them. I have a steering arm I want to use but only has the taper on one side. What degree of taper do i need to drill halfway through to make this work from the opposite side..is it something like 7 degrees? I am ***uming you can just drill the taper halfway through, right? Thanks
Yes 7 degree for Ford tie rod ends, you can taper half way from the other side also if the arm is thick enuff. If it was mine I would weld up the hole and re taper from the correct side
thanks...do the aftermarket rod ends like speedway, etc. fit the same as a ford one?..are all the ends the same tapers? Some places on the net have tie rod and end ***emblies available as a set, was wondering about the diameters of them also..maybe all these hotrod ones are the same?
I'm not in the US, but 7 degree does seem to be the most common. You will also need to match the diameters so that when it is all tightened up the tapered shaft engages properly and doesn't pull through too far, or not enough for the nut to go on all the way.
I've got Speedways early Ford tie rod ends and my steering arms are owner made. 7 degree tapered reamer is perfect.
