Hello everybody a friend of mine has a 1951 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup. Engine number is 0237086F56Z so we're pretty sure it's a 235 line six chevy engine. He's not really happy with the transmission that's inside now and wants to swap it. I'm having a Muncie 319 3-speed overdrive manual transmission lying around (see picture 2 below, shifter on the transmission is a wrong one but the rest should would). Now my question: Is it possible to run that transmission on the 3100 pickup or should we consider using something different? Thanks already for your help!
well if the input shaft is the right size and spline count you should be able to run it. guys do s10 5 spd and borg warner made trans for chevys with od. may have to make an adapter.im sure somebody on here has tried it and will chime in.
As Jetnowl said, it won't work with the stock rear axle. He cold swap to a 55/59 pickup rear axle to go to open drive though. Usually those old stock transmissions start jumping out of gear when they get worn and if that is the case and he doesn't want to swap rear axles and have a driveshaft made he might want to look into rebuilding the trans.
The old trans is obviously one for use with a torquetube driveline, your 319 OD trans is for an open driveline. Your 319 OD trans has linkage that is setup in such a way, it does't have the common "H" pattern, 2nd and 3rd gears are "flipped" due to the lever hanging down instead of up. Someone obviously adapter this shifter to fit with the OD components. I've seen this same "question" and pics asked either here before or on another forum. I remember the modified shifter. Patrick's makes a kit to convert a Saginaw 4 speed to use with an enclosed-torquetube driveline and they supply the shifter also. You have to send your mainshaft in for mods, but in the long run, it could be cheaper than having to also swap rearends and have a driveshaft fabbed up. The 3219 OD trans could be worth some $$$ to the right person. Butch/56sedandelivery.
