Ok I have a 1957 Desoto Diplomat , and have a starter motor problem. The car has a direct drive starter, as many other mopar cara of that era. It is the wrong one, it has too long neck to go in to the transmission, somebody had solved it by using a spacer .
It is ok, but the starter is at the end of its life otherwise.
I also have a starter from 53 plymouth flathead six manual. It is perfect fit to Desoto's ******, but the gearing is wrong. Has 9 teeth bendix, aswell the one came with the car. Difference is the size . Desoto's starter has 25mm gear, and plymouth's starter has 30mm.

Will that bendix of these two interchange ? The 57 starter is mdm-6001 and the other is mch-6205

If you are trying to keep it completely stock this suggestion won't help. If you are not, try contacting the people at DB Electrical in Tennessee. (800) 753-2242. I talked with a guy named Hagen and he was very helpful. They have charts on applicability on their starters. They can probably answer your bendix interchange question. No, I have no $$$ interest in DBE.

The mechanic doing my engine install recommended I get a mini super starter to solve clearance issues. I just bought a mini starter from DBE. The good news? Brand new $72.00 with free shipping! I am new to this product but understand it is what they use in race engines. Supposed to turn the motor over much faster than the slow stock ones. The starter I bought has 10 teeth on the bendix gear. Is that what you are looking for? Hope this helps.

The 6 volt starter used on a 12 volt system gets you a high speed starter.
We did that often back in the day.
