My dog and cat both have tapeworms, got the dog treated but every pet store around here is sold out of the feline wormer. Will dog wormer work on the cat too as long as i give him the right dose according to his weight?
go to a vet .... don't **** around giving the cat the wong stuff ..... could do more damage than good ......
Here is a vet site that you can use for good information for Dogs and Cats... A valuable resource for cat owners seeking information on veterinary medicine...Good Luck ..H Main Page...http://www.vetinfo4cats.com/catindex.html OR Worm Page....http://www.vetinfo4cats.com/cworms.html
My mom did that!!!!! She poked a hole in the dog wormer cap and put a couple drops in the cat's mouth. The cat ran away for three days. When it came back it had lost most of it's hair. And when it had kittens the ones that lived were really strange Man I'm glad I never had worms or at least never told my MOM!!!!
I worked at a animal shelter for 10 years we gave the cats the same wormer as dogs got, it was called Strongid paste (pyrantel pamoate) and was actually used on horses too just a 1/4 teas**** or so for a cat and the next time it ****s no more worms! another type is Ivermectin both should be available from a farm store over the counter
I just ordred some online... problem solved, don't wanna take the chance of killin the gf's cat! Adam
Since I'm a small animal veterinarian,I guess I'll chime in. Tapeworms are transmitted by fleas or by eating undercooked meat. They're two,or sometimes three, host parasites. If it's both animals, you might well have a flea problem so look for that, too. If your tapeworm segments are small grains of rice or little flatworms, they're "Diplidia"-the ones carried by fleas. Tapeworms are cestodes(flatworms) so regular wormers won't work. Pyrantel pamoate is the active ingredient in both Strongid T (horse strength) and Nemex(small animal strength) You can use both in small animals if you dose it right BUT it only gets hookworms and roundworms,NOT tapes. Cat dose is not the same as dog dose per pound. Another general wormer is fenbendazole (Panacur). It will get roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and some tapeworms(Taenia species) BUT NOT the small flat ones mentioned above. For these guys, you need Praziquantal-generally marketed as Droncit. It's great on tapes, can be found as a generic, and it a bit pricey for a big dog. It's really hard to dose cats off the dog stuff because the dose per pound is so different in each species. Try to get the right stuff for each pet. Tips in general: 1. Cats are not small dogs-in many cases the doses per pound are way different-partly based on the cat's lack of some very helpful detox pathways in their livers. Never give a cat aspirin,Tylenol or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug unless you want a dead cat. 2. There are some okay mail-order places but PetMeds is not one of them. They are notorious-and have been sued lots of times-for selling prerscription drugs without proper authorization. They also are not supplied by many veterinary drug manufacturers so where they get their meds from is questionable. The stuff they sell may,or may not be what it is supposed to be. And, if you have a problem the pharmaceutical manufacturer may deny any responsibility. Attention fellow HAMBer's-if you've got a vet question, feel free to PM me or send me an email at petvets@yahoo.com (but identify yourself as a HAMBer not a Spammer). Unless it gets out of hand,I'll be happy to help out with your pet questions.
For some odd reason I thought this tread was gonna be about "tail draggers". Good luck with the critters.
