I bought my 3100 (registered as a 1951) from my brother about 2 months ago. He began restoring it in California in 1998. I had it shipped to Georgia. It's Ford Performance white, shot in Imron (for whatever reason), got a 350 4 bolt main engine with headers and an Edelbrock carb. It has a Chevy Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 transmission, a shortened Ford rear end and some nice wide tires and aluminum wheels. Right now it needs the Altman door latches, a new bed floor and a chrome grille. No rust to speak of except surface rust in the usual places. I'm actually trying to track down the poster, ol'chevy. Looks like he did the Altman door latch conversion without removing the windows. The Altman instructions say to remove the windows. Also looks like he has a nice truck.
Hey Mac,welcome. There's a dedicated social group here for AD trucks. I think Altman recommend removing the glass simply to avoid any problems with possible damage from grinding sparks and for better access etc. I'm not sure if your truck has the one piece glass or the later doors with vents. The one piece glass is relatively easy to remove anyway. Here's a link to the AD Truckers group, head on over and say hi! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/social-forums/a-d-truckers.116/
