Ran onto a guy near me that has two 401's for sale, he elected to use a Buick 350 instead in his 66 special. Anyway, one is supposed to be lo miles and is complete from pan to carb, including trans, the other is less complete but also has the trans, both automatics. He wants $600 for the pair. I think they are worth more than that, what are your comments?

Two 401s and a Buick th400 trans (rare now), that a deal. These are very cool motors, quite small for a "big block" motor, fit nicely in cars as small a model 'A' and are; Smooth, Torquey & Beautiful. I love mine. Many of us would have those in the bed of our pickups before noon tomorrow.
Best Regards and Good Luck with all your endeavors, KB.

They're a cool looking engine and they go like stink. Also they're traditional as hell. Go get em!

I've been looking for a 401 for my current build, for quite a while. Buy 'em both and I'll buy the one you don't use.

    $600 for both? That's a deal, a HUGE deal !!

While I agree the engines, if they are 401's, are very likely worth the asking price, if not more. However, nowhere in the OP's post does it say what year they are.....they could be '59 up.....if they are earlier than '64, the trannies would be dynaflows, not st400.

Well, thanks for all the responses, one of the 401's is complete from carb to pan, I might have said this earlier. The engine is very clean, indicative of low miles (not recently "glitzed up" either). That trans is on the motor and is not a turbo 400, it is the buick slush box. I really don't care, I tend to put these in vehicles that don't need much power, like my '29 A truck. Although that has a 3 speed plus OD from an 80's ford F 150. So, I will scoop these up and store them with Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders, and at a minimum, save them. I am in upstate NY, so those that might want one can message me later about it. Thanks again. PS, I just saved a '48 Willys factory stake body truck from falling into a creek, it is pretty rough but the cab is pretty good, except the floor. Par for these. I can see a new ch***is under the cab with a nailhead for power. Later in the plan, tho.
