Many people have recommended adding an electric fuel pump as an emergency backup and also to prime the line after the car has been sitting a while. I was thinking of putting a ****on or switch on the dash so I could turn it off once the car started. What are the issues to consider and what is the best pump and regulator to use? thanks

Speedway sells a 6v low pressure electric pump. Just plumb the new pump in parallel with the existing setup.

you shouldn't try to pull fuel thru the electric pump ( including the facet types ) it should remain on while the engine is running it will not hurt the mechanical pump on the motor to push fuel thru it , but if its off the electric pump will add some resistance to the mechanical pump and can cause vapor lock in doing so .

One thing to consider, on a flathead ford, is if the mechanical pump quits working it is most likely due to a hole or rip in the diaphragm of the mechanical pump. Therefore if you push fuel through it with the electric fuel pump would be putting gas right into the crank case. As a primer you are alright.

A holley low pressure fuel regulator (2-4) works well.

    Airtex: ATX-E8902 is 2-4psi - 30 gph -rated 6volt
    Airtex: ATX-E8011 is 5-8psi - 30 gph

The P/Ns for the Airtex Pumps are:
    6 Volt, E-8011 / E-8902
    12 Volt, E-8012S

Carters are nice. Rotatory, fairly quite. Needs a byp*** with check ball if it is to be used with a mechanical pump. Fuel will not flow through it without it on.

Close to the tank is best.

maybe stimpy had a vapor lock problem, on the other hand hooked up an electric pump {airtex}at the tank so I wouldn't get vapor lock. 51 merc flatty. it has worked out great. i run a gas filter before the elec pump and the pump is only 2-4 lb pressure. when I feel the flatty faultering a bit I hit the switch and it keeps running no lock up so far. a lot of the guys on ford barn run them on the30s cars with the flatty motor cause it gets super hot under those small hoods when the sides are on. the merc seems to want to do it when the outside temp is around 90 and high humidity.

run e-10 and the rvp is high and the base gas is **** so it vapor locks easily with a suction pump in front , so far had to convert several cars to a low pressure pusher pump ( had to do my FIls 49 S8 SS Chieftain ) Chicago gas is not nice to old cars
