Hi all, Hope I'm posting this in the right place. While doing some research on members of a local car club I came across an issue of this magazine on ebay. More specifically i'm interested in the John Walter 1940 Ford coupe. The thing is I'm not sure if the car/person is the one I'm looking for, and don't want to purchase the mag only to find out it has nothing to do with him. If someone could scan the article for me. I'd really appreciate it. PS. If someone else wants to purchase the magazine after seeing this, I honestly don't mind. I'm sure most of you would get more use and enjoyment out of it than I would. If I can get an electronic copy of the article, i'll be more than happy.
Tell us more about the car and Mr. Walter if you know any more info. It might jog some folks memories and who knows, someone may have a copy of the magazine on hand. Was he (and the car) from the local area? I see you are in Silver Spring. Good luck with the search........Don.
Hey Don, John (sometimes Johnny) Walter lived in Garrett Park, MD. He was president of the Quarter Milers, the club I have been inquiring about in other threads. He was taking Refrigeration at Columbia Tech in the fall of 1962. His father was a retired Major, USMC and worked for the Navy. Unfortunately the only information I have about the car and Johnny comes from small articles in the local newspaper (more like a newsletter). His car was a "lime gold 1940 Ford." Articles note -"Average costs of one member's car parts and accessories are : Olds Engine- $1,000; upholstery- $300 for rolled and pleated hand-s***ched black & white Naugahyde; body work to remove dents and tool marks-$300; lime gold candy-type paint - $300" (This was reported March 19, 1962. I believe the prices all refer to his car but I'm not positive.) -He won "the 3rd place trophy in the pre war rod and custom division at the Great Show." (This was reported May 7, 1962. I'm not sure what show they are referring to here, but a previous article mentions the club ***isting "the Ramrods at the Rod and Custom Show, DC Armory, April 6-7-8". I think this is the most likely candidate, but it is possible they are referring to the earlier Frederick Rod & Custom Show put on by the Frederick Road Angels at Key Chevrolet February 24 and 25. -He won "3 show trophies in 3 tries in car show compe***ion" during the summer of 1962. this may include the previously mentioned third place trophy. -He was going "to Daytona Beach, Florida for the Daytona Speedway Display. He recently added $200 worth of chrome plating to dazzle the spectators!" (reported February 15, 1963) Thanks, Abigail
Lots of great info there, Abigail. I just thumbed through my issues of the '64 and '65 programs from the Ram Rods R&C shows at the D.C. Armory hoping by chance there may have been a picture of the car somewhere, but no luck. I'm reasonably sure there is no connection, but my '40 Standard Coupe (< see my avatar) was once Gold back in the 70s, long before I owned it and apparently it was gold for many yrs. I've traced the ownership back through 4 or 5 owners (and I've owned it since 1990) to a fellow in Beltsville in the 70's and Monrovia, Md. before that. Nothing other than the gold color would seem to match up from your description. Good luck with your continued search, wish I could be of more help. I love to see the history of old hot rods brought to light as it adds a certain charm and ambiance to the cars, especially if you can get an opportunity to speak with previous owners like I have and share their memories of the car....................Don.
Abigail, I see you've joined up on the Maryland HAMB Social Group. Post your inquiry on there as well, who knows someone may have memories of Mr. Walter or the car, or have a copy of the magazine around somewhere. Car guys are a strange bunch, we never seem to throw anything away.
I found the article, it appears to be the car you are looking for. The color is Kandy Lime Gold Green Laquer.
........No problem, I understand completely. I've just been trying to help out the OP above so if she posts again maybe she would appreciate you e-mailing or faxing some pics to her. Thanks for searching out the article...........Don.
I have hundreds of spare Little Pages magazines, but not of this issue. If I did, I`d mail her the magazine.
Hi guys, Thank you all so much for your help. Don- You have been an angel. I had lurked a little bit reading the forums, but wasn't sure how my requests would taken. As someone very very new to the hot-rod /customs world, I was wary of being that person who asks for help all the time and has nothing to give in return. Stanlow- That is so gracious of you. I was looking for this article as a side project in my job as a small-town archivist. With our limited storage space, ideally I would keep the whole magazine, but realistically only the single article would be saved. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that an electronic copy would be fine. I'll pm you my email address and thank your wife for me ahead of time -Abigail
akabaker, if you get a scan, can you post it here? I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to see it.
absolutely. I'm also going to try to post in at least one other thread where I was requesting information about the Quarter Milers. Maybe a picture will jog some peoples memories.
We aim to please.........Seriously, this is one of the most forthcoming and helpful forums you will ever find on the internet. We sometimes tease and often give each other a hard time on here but, the scope of knowledge on this site and the willingness to help each other out is immeasurable. It truly is a community......................Don.
