we are trying to put a v-**** from Vintage Gl*** in my sedan. body shop tells me its about 1" too big. Vintage says to take a belt sander and sand it down to fit. anybody done this or had this happen?? I'm kind of leary with a $300-400 piece of gl***.
I have done this on many occasions. Without experience this would not be a DIY. It is an easy task, I use a water cooled 6" vertical belt sander, safely take off 1/8" to 1/4" no issues...I would defiantly use a gl*** shop, so if anything goes wrong you have someone to ***** at if something goes wrong instead of yourself.... Not to disrespect a reputable vender..really. But $400 for flat laminated gl***? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
its the 1-piece bent or curved w/shield. I'm really tempted to go back to the original style if they will take this one back. I would even buy the 2-piece style from them in that case. it even caused concern for my body shop & gl*** man that are doing the install.
I like the two-piece windshields in early Fords. The "bent" windshields have always looked like they are warped to me. Just my opinion Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
There's another part I would be sending back (see Speedway spindle with no cotter pin hole thread). Maybe they will stop selling **** if the public stops buying it.
Personally I think that bent gl*** is as ugly as a mud fence,,they just look too modern for a car that had a split windshield. Replace the gl*** and sell the one piece windshield to a street rodder. HRP
91steve, Send that oversize one-piece back and install the original 2 piece as it looks so much better. You will be much happier in the long run.
Not really, I just prefer the resto look in 40's. Henry did it right. I looked into putting a bent gl*** windshield in but I couldn't get my eye to adjust because of the distorted view. I did do a v-**** in my 38 Chevy and it was ok.
Had a friend bought one of the one piece. Not even close to fitting and I agree they look stupid, to my eyes. As far as V-****, I believe they were doing that on those "street rods" of the fifties.
Yeah, I was referring to the OP when I quoted your post. 40"s just look "right" with org. style 2-piece windshield and too "street rod" with the V-**** style. I agree with you completely on the aforementioned resto look. (See my avatar <<)............Don.
Heck, they are still V-****ing windshields. I have had several 40 Ford's over the last 40 plus years and I couldn't imagine trying to re-invent the wheel,or in this case the windshield. It's your car and do what you like but the consensus is keep it like Henry did it! HRP
not to piss anyone off or violate the rules of this forum, but I'm building a "hotrod" with some street rod qualities. I definitely love the old school look but at 61 years old I've earned a little comfort. My car is a black 2dr sedan with traditional org/yellow/wht flames, a pinup, red/wht tuck & roll, & chrome wheels. I built it for cruising not racing, been there done that. This is my 3rd 40 Ford, the other two were pure hotrod coupes. One had a 394 Olds & hydro, the other was a built 350 & 4-speed. Now its time to take the wife & grandkids along. But in this Nebraska humidity, I added Vintage Air, heated seats to keep this old back loose on long trips, and power windows with the switches that use the original cranks. Its powered by a 305 SBC NO BILLET, just chrome valve covers & air cleaner, 700R4, IFS with p/s & power disc brakes. sorry if I offended anyone, but each man's car is a representation of himself. 99% sure I'm going back to the split type window if Vintage will take back the 1-piece without boning me too bad. Best wishes to everyone, Steve
^^^^Don has it right. There's a lot more important stuff to sweat. V**** or original, when I get a chance to look at a well done 40 of either variety (street or hot) I don't p*** up the chance. It IS all good.
That's right on track for me Steve - I am a diehard resto rodder and really don't give a flying monkey's *** about anything other than keeping the original look of the car and incorporating creature comforts so I can ride in comfort cross country if I want to - my masochistic days are over - too many scars, lumps, bumps and creaking joints - and that's just the car That having been said, the V **** ugly windshield doesn't provide any aesthetic enhancement to my eyes and the two piece windshield works fine with no noticeable degradation of vision on my '40 SD. Ultimately for me it has to be about the spirit of the thing rather than obsessive adherence strict letter of the law to the detriment or ride, handling, safety and comfort....
V-**** and one-piece bent are two different styles. V-**** (two-piece ****ed together without center bar) was done on Hirohata Merc 60 years ago and is as traditional as anything else. One-piece bent, not so much. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
