  2. Welcome back to traditional engine drive fans, they work better and look like they belong.

Buy a zips riser & the water pump.

Then get a good steel blade mechanical fan.

This is what I have on both my Deuces and never have any heating problems.HRP

I bet you weren't buying SPAL fans. I've never had one fail and ran one on my daily driver Jeep for 5 years, and the one on my 27 has been on there for over 7 years.

The clutch fan was on my 55 for 15 years, I changed it to a shorter clutch when I went to a smaller blower belt. Good stuff, those mechanical fans.

Right on HRP! I'm running a stock 1957 short chevy pump and fan on my 283. No problems here and it looks right.

I'm no great fan of electric fans, but the stocker on my OT Bonnie has been running for 18 years without fail.

No electric fans for me on my 32. Just last weekend, had to fix off topic taurus because the relay burned up stopping the fan. Overheated, pushed antifreeze all over Sam's Club parking lot. Tow it home, bla, bla, bla. I am going to use the Zips like mentioned above.

I have electric fans on my '60 T-bird and Zipper roadster with thermostat controls. Zipper fan is 15 years old and never failed. IMG_0066.JPG

  12. If I had to run a electric fan on a hot rod I would have to have a hood, but that's just me. HRP

  13. Ok, why or how did a Efan fix your "cutting out" problem ?

What exactly is cutting out ?

How are the 2 related ?

I'm betting you needed a shroud for your mechanical fan

Both systems are reliable and proven if installed correctly and in good mechanical condition. I am partial to the electric if I run AC because of the stop and go driving (in town) also for the on-off set temperature feature. I do the mechanical without AC. I am real wavey here, kind of like drawing a line in the sand

The beautify America folks should outlaw them for cosmetics reasons...My roadster has one and I don't open my hood just for that reason. It has an electric and a mechanical fan. It's been sitting for several years now. I was building a period frame for it but I probably should just sell it. I would feel so much like a hypocrite. 32s are tough due to the elevation of the fan. I never cared for the jacked up fan because it was not available for my build era but it is much better than an electric. My buddies thought I was nuts not to just slap on an electric fan on my 34 P/U I don't do slap on hotrodding. It's too important to me.

I don't have a preference but I've run a few electric fans through the years with no issues and at present have one my 3 window. Most folks I've seen having issues with electric fans are they bought cheap ones, If your going to run one get a good one, Whats the saying "Ya get what ya pay for".

It was overheating at every light and I guess the carbs weren't regulated moving it from New Hampshire to Texas that could f been that issue.
It runs 180 temp wise now

In my book mechanical fans don't belong on anything. They're inefficient at low rpm when needed most and mostly redundant at higher rpm/speed when most cars don't need a fan anyway. Electric fans run at higher speed when needed most at low rpm inching along in traffic on a hot day for example. Plus, they don't eat up horsepower like mechanicals.

  21. I have both on different cars. Don't have a problem with any of them if kept up with the maintenance. I like the elec cause it's kinda hard to get your hand caught in it. heh heh he
Yep I got careless a time or two but never injured.
Don't ask me about the table saw tho. oops didn't need that knuckle anyway.

Hrp, I looked up the zips , briefly due to being at work, problem is I can't seem to find one for small block ford. I will look again shortly but is there any other options out there for sbf? Btw thanks for all the input to my rant.

I have lost three radiators to Flex fans and the clutch fan on the Jag XK engine going in a hot rod is way too long, so it's either firewall surgery and lose legroom or go with my favorite heavy duty fan shroud combo from Cooling Components Inc - 2600 genuine cfm, super quiet and 2-5/8" deep. It has saved a ton of firewall surgery and allowed me to run a SBF in my '40 Ford with the stock firewall. Tired of ' $1000 ' flex fans....

I'm betting there's not enough idle vacuum to spin a regular steel fan. He's stalling the engine.

I never had a fan go through the radiator, but one time I hit a bump so hard it popped the oil filler cap off my Scout, and the fan drove it into the radiator.

  26. No you lost me -
The engine can't handle the drag from a fan ? Is that what you are saying ?

Obviously the fan isn't the issue then is it? Which is the point of my original question.

It's sort of like this - " I got new glasses and now my foot feels better. " Wow how's that work? - Well because he can see now he quit stubbing his toe the coffe table and the door jamb right ? So what's the issue there ? Next guy see that if your feet hurt you might need glasses. See the logic employed there?

The mechanical fan on my 32 could not get the job done in 95 degree temps sitting in traffic. I bought two 10" $30.00 electric fans at a swap meet. I installed them both in front of the radiator, you could not even see them unless you looked through thr grill. Problem solved, it would idle all day on the hottest day down here. Both cheap ass fans are still going strong after 12 years. I gave the same treatment to my 30 coupe and Chevy II, cured them too. They work.

You and I must be Brothers from different Mothers ! :D I will never have a mechanical fan on any car I build again. Last thing I want is a buzzsaw spinning around in a car at 7000 rpms with no hood. I am still wearing a little scar on my left arm from where one kissed it years ago, and a friend had one come through the hood of his 50 Ford and put a very nice louver in it.

Haters gonna hate, but I prefer efficiency over sticking to 100 year old technology just for the sake of being traditional.

  30. If electric fans were the work of the Devil, how come 99.999% of cars on the road now have electric fans? I have a variety of fans on different cars, and if they work, I leave them there.
I have looked directly at electric fans (without protection), and my eyes still work.
