I have a 57' D100 with the 230 bolted to a car bell housing. Flywheel has the correct 172 tooth flywheel and starter drive/pinion (that was on the truck). Once I bolted up the truck start to the car bell housing the teeth did not sit deep enough into the ring gear. The starter now will turn over the motor but will grind/ruin ring gear. The starter has 9 teeth and is 1 inch in diameter.

Do I need the nose from a car, such as a 1957 Coronet? From what I could find there does not appear to be a gear that will work on my armature.

Another option may be to weld up the mounting holes on the starter and off set them?

Any suggestions? I had to run the car bell and clutch for my trans swap. The truck bell is too long front to back. I am running the truck flywheel machined for the car clutch.

Find a 57-61 car starter motor - there is a guy on the HAMB selling a 57 325 Dodge V8 and the starter off that would help you

After further reading the only bolt on solution is a 146T ring gear and a matching starter. The pinion for a 146T wheel should be 1.25" diameter. That would give me the proper engagement. If this is the case then the car bell housings have different spacing for later 172T wheels.

Unless the car starters 57-61 have the pinion positioned 1/8" closer to the ring gear (than my truck starter) they will not work.

I bought a 1960 car starter but it has 3 holes and is marked MDU-7001 with nose marked 7-27. The two bolt holes are the same but the pinion position is the same as my MDM-6001 starter.

I found this to not be the case in my situation. What did work was the 146t ring on my flywheel and the matching 30mm pinion on the older starter.
